But important fact in this story is that Rezanov was dispatched
to Japan in order to call for Russo-Japanese commerce, when Japan
permitted it only to China and the Netherlands.
Rezanov, after being refused the demand, got angry with Japan,
ordered two subordinate captains to attack Japan, and they attacked
the islands of Sakhalin and Etorofu, killing some people;
Juno and Avos were the name of the ships used for the attack.

Freedom is, first of all, the chance to formulate the available choices, to argue over them -- and then, the opportunity to choose.” C. Wright Mills

I watched a Russian rock-opera Juno and Avos, written by Andrej Vozněsenskij and composed by Alexej Rybnikov. Let me cite its story from Amazon.com, DVD
This plot is fiction based on a true story. Rezanov and Conchita's love,Rezanov's death and Conchita's taking a vow seem to be true.
But important is that from this story, the fact Rezanov was dispatched to Japan in order to call for Russo-Japanese commerce while Japan permitted it only to China and Netherland.
Rezanov, after refused the demand, got angry with Japan, ordered two subordinate captains attack Japan, and they attacked Sakhalin and Etorof island, killed some people: Juno and Avos were the name of the ships used for the attack.
This fact is completely concealed in this opera. Apart from its value as an art, we Japanese would not like this incomplete history of Rezanov circulate all over the world.

2008-06-24 On Yomota Inuhiko’s Remark
In Shincho (2008, May), YOMOTA Inuhiko makes a report on the Internatioal Symposium on Mizoguchi Kenji at Udine in Italy. According to Yomota, Mark Le Fanu from Denmark, who wrote a book on Mizoguchi, but was unable to read Japanese at all, appreciated Mizoguchi's Chikamatsu Story so highly that Yomota told him that in Japan, until Meiji Era there was not any idea of love at all and made Le Fanu aghasted, and Yomota said he was not an expert of the theme then recommended SAEKI Junko's The Origin of Love. But someone said unfortunately the book has not been translated into English. After that, Yomota dares to deplore that unaware of such a fundamental cultural facts Le Fanu could make researches on Mizoguchi.
Though, I, as an expert, asserts Yomota's remark is not true. If you know The Tale of Genji, it could be easily seen through. I have repaeatedly criticized SAEKI's theory and it is difficult to imagine Yomota is completely unaware of that. In this report, Yomota writes 説教節 instead of 説経節. I dare to deplore that Yomota is not sufficiently sincere and seems to have scarce knowledge on Japanese classical literature and I have to see this sort of figure appear on the international stage as if a representative of Japanese scholarship. Of course, the theme of love in Mizoguchi's films based on Chikamatsu or Saikaku are modernized. But the reality is far from Yomota's exaggerated expression.
Therefore, I recommend Mr. Le Fanu to forget Yomota's remark.
such a cultural facts ---> such a cultural fact(こんな言い方しないけど)
Though, I, as an expert, asserts ---> However, I, as an expert, asserts(本当は I would argue ぐらいにしたい)
the theme of love . . . are modernized ---> the theme of love . . . is modernized.
表現としておかしいものを挙げていくときりがないが、目に余るところだけあげると
make researches on ---> conduct [do] research into [on]
have scarce knowledge ---> have little knowledge
as if a representative of Japanese scholarship ---> as if he were [was] a representative of Japanese academia(これ自体英語の表現になじまない)
880 > Though, I, as an expert, asserts Yomota's remark is not true.
こういう文頭の 「Thoughコンマ」は、英作文能力が小谷野レベルの日本人がよくする間違い?
> I dare to deplore that Yomota is not sufficiently sincere and seems to have scarce knowledge on Japanese classical literature and I have to see this sort of figure appear on the international stage as if a representative of Japanese scholarship.
二度も出てくる「dare to deplore」という珍妙な表現は、小谷野の脳内ではどういう日本語と結びついている?
