Explosion near Egyptian pyramids, 3 injured
Police and forensic officials say a small bomb exploded near Egypt’s iconic pyramids, injuring three peddlers

The officials say the explosives were leftover munitions, but they couldn't provide more details about when or why the bomb was planted. They say Wednesday's explosion occurred some 500 feet (150 meters) from the pyramids outside Cairo.
The officials say the explosion was triggered by peddlers who saw metal glinting out of the sand and began hitting it with iron sticks, thinking the casing might conceal valuable goods. Three of them were seriously wounded.
The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren't allowed to release the information.

CAIRO - He enters a big room, where about a dozen people, all wearing white lab coats, are busy with their work. He walks up to a lady who is peering through a microscope at a coin. In her hand, she’s holding something like a needle.
A priceless treasure: Japanese Ambassador Norihiro Okuda (C) examining one of the artifacts in the Conservation Centre at the Grand Egyptian Museum, due to open in 2015.
"What are you doing?" he asks. She removes the mask she’s wearing. "I'm cleaning the rust from this coin," the young Egyptian archaeologist replies.
"How old is it?" he asks. "It’s from the Roman era."
The Ambassador takes off his glasses and examines the coin. "Wonderful!"
Last week, Japanese Ambassador Norihiro Okuda toured the Conversation Centre, established for the purpose of conserving Egyptian artifacts, including those destined for the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM), as well as to develop the capacities of the conservators.
He roamed the laboratories and stores to see what has been done so far, speaking with the Japanese expert, as well as the Egyptian staff.
The story of the GEM began when it was decided to construct a new museum, because the Egyptian Museum in Al Tahrir Square is too small.
It contains statues, stone sarcophaguses, Pharaonic mummies and much more, but many large artifacts are in storage, because there isn’t room to display them.
Also, given the site limitations in Al Tahrir, it would be very difficult to expand the museum.
In 2002, former president Mubarak laid the foundation stone for the GEM, located 2km west of the Giza Pyramids, near a motorway interchange.
The building's north and south walls line up directly with the Great Pyramid of Khufu and the Pyramid of Menkaure. The GEM will allow Egypt to become a major worldwide hub for Pharaonic history and the most sought-after place for Egyptologists.
In 2007, $550 million had been secured for building the GEM, including a $392 million soft loan from the Japan International Co-operation Agency (JICA). The Egyptian Government contributed around $150 million, while the remaining would be funded through donations and international organisations.
The GEM is being built on 486,000 square metres of land.
This space will not only include the exhibition galleries, but also an archaeological study storage and educational centre; a library, children’s museum, children’s school and outdoor children’s recreational gardens, a museum for people with special needs and an educational centre containing a 3-D cinema, a theatre, arts and crafts workshops for adults and children; in addition to retail shops, and food and beverage and recreational areas.
In co-operation with the Executive Authority of the GEM, the Ministry of Culture, JICA is providing technical assistance to the GEM’s Conservation Centre, which opened in 2010 and is attached to the museum.
"The GEM is going to collect 100,000 artifacts for the exhibition and research," said Mikio Nakamura, an expert and the chief adviser and co-ordinator for the Conservation Centre project.
"Of the 100,000 artifacts, we have already checked more than 22,000, including King Tut’s Golden Mask, allowing us to make an accurate database," he told The Egyptian Gazette.
The museum will be ready in 2012, but the opening has been delayed till 2015.
Egyptian Minister of Antiquities Zahi Hawass said in a press conference held in the Conservation Centre earlier this month: "It’s not politics, it’s culture, so the project must take its time to be implemented well.”
"We are facing difficulties because of the sudden change in the schedule. I hope that well-managed co-ordination, a good information-sharing system and a clear division of responsibility among the concerned organisations and agencies will improve things," Nakamura said.
The database for the artifacts must also be finished before the GEM opens, because the selection of the artifacts for display and their transfer to the museum can only be done on the basis of accurate information about the place of storage and the size of the artifacts.
The Egyptian side created a database for the artifacts, which will be transferred to the GEM. But there were mistakes and duplications in the entered data, due to a lack of rules governing the procedures for data entry.
Therefore, JICA decided to create the Archaeological Database Department (ADD), in order to reconstruct the database.
The ADD is visiting other museums and storehouses at archaeological sites, in order to identify the artifacts registered in the database, confirm the registration numbers and sizes, and also take photos of them, which is standard procedure.
Atsushi Suzuki, an IT expert who is revising the database, has a lot to say about it.
The JICA-GEMCC project is now employing almost 20 staff, engaged in revising the database. Suzuki is working with the manager, who is Egyptian and an Egyptologist, managing the staff and the database.
“After discussions with the manager, I have developed a simple database. We had problems with duplication and inputting errors," he told this newspaper.
"Even if we go to a site, it takes time to find the artifacts because of the wrong information. Sometimes an artifact is completely different from what we are led to believe.
“It's like we’re training every day. I believe that, in the near future, the Egyptian staff in ADD will be able to handle the work without JICA experts,” he added, smiling.
As I ended my tour of the JICA-GEMCC project, Nakamura stopped me and said:
“I’ve written a poem to express my feelings about working here. I feel really honoured and privileged to be working to preserve Egypt’s wonderful treasures.”
He gave me a copy of his poem and it went like this:
‘Receiving the light
From the world far past
On the plateau of Giza
I devote my profound delight
For preserving human heritage.’

Institute for Mummies and the Icemanの生物・人類学者アルバート・ジンク氏は、古代人は発がん物質と無縁なわけではないと述べる。

(Institute for Mummies and the Iceman)」の古病理学者、アルバート・ジンク(Albert Zink)氏は「首にあるこの切り傷によりラムセス3世は殺されたという事実にほぼ疑いはない。
Egypt’s archaeology museum closed by labour protest
Antiquities ministry employees once again demand better wages, a clean ministry and permanent contracts - this time upping the ante by closing off the Egyptian Museum to tourists in Tahrir Square
Ahram Online, Tuesday 4 Jun 2013
Hundreds of Egypt’s ministry of antiquities employees closed the doors of the Egyptian Museum in downtown Cairo's Tahrir Square, barring tourists from entering as they voice demands for better benefits.
Archeologists, managers and security guards on strike demand permanent contracts for 4065 employees, better wages in all ministry sectors and to purge the ministry of corruption.
The Tourism Police unsuccessfully attempted to convince the protesters to end their strike and head to the ministry headquarter in Zamalek to set their demands directly with the minister.
The antiquities minister points out that his approval of permanent contracts is dependent on the approval of the finance ministry.
The issues of permanent contracts and wages are not new, however. In February 2012, for example, employees protested for the same demands in front of the antiquities ministry headquarters.
Around 275,000 employees have been granted permanent contracts since the 2011 uprisings out of an estimated 500,000 government employees on temporary contracts, according to data from the Central Agency for Organisation and Administration.Around 5.8 million people work for the public administration; a figure that will likely climb to 6.3 million if temporary workers are finally granted tenure.
Accordingly, the wages and benefits of public-sector workers are expected to grow by 21 percent in the 2013/14 budget to LE172 billion, accounting for 25 percent of total expenditures – up from 24 percent in the current fiscal year budget.

The tomb of goddess Mut’s head of beer production was discovered today in Al-Khokha area on Luxor’s west bank
Nevine El-Aref , Friday 3 Jan 2014
A Japanese mission from Waseda University uncovered the tomb of Khonso-Im-Heb, who was the head of beer production for goddess Mut and the head of the galleries during the Ramesside era.
The discovery occurring during routine cleaning work carried out at the frontcourt of tomb number TT47, which belongs to a top official in the reign of the New Kingdom king Amenhotep III.
The tomb of Khonso-Im-Heb is T-shaped with two halls and a burial chamber. It is also connected to an unfinished tomb of an as-yet unidentified person called Houn.
Jiro Kondo, head of the Japanese mission, said that the tomb is well preserved and is fully painted with scenes depicting the tomb’s owner with his family members and in front of different ancient Egyptian deities.
Scenes of the “Open Mouse” ritual also figures on one of the tomb’s wall while the ceiling is decorated with geometrical paintings with vivid colours. A solar boat is depicted at its core.
Minister of State of Antiquities Mohamed Ibrahim told Ahram Online that security has been tightened around the tomb until the completion of the excavation works there. He said that a comprehensive restoration would be carried out after it is fully excavated to allow visitors.

A Japanese man is walking with a cart 11,000km (6,800 miles) across the length of Africa - only a year after completing a round-the-world trek in the same manner.
Masahito Yoshida, 33, of Tottori left the Egyptian port city of Alexandria on Sunday on his journey to the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa, the Japan Times newspaper reports. He's taking everything he needs - around 100kg (220lb) of water, food, cooking utensils and a tent - in a two-wheeled cart that he pulls behind him.
His route will take him through Sudan, Ethiopia and Tanzania along the way - a journey encompassing deserts, savannah grasslands and high mountains. "I am excited about meeting people and animals in places that will be passed by if you travel by train or bus," Yoshida says.
If he makes it, Yoshida will have added another continent to his current tally of four. The 44,000km round-the-globe trip he finished in June 2013 took him across Europe, Asia, North America and Australia. Yoshida overcame immigration bureaucracy, theft, and several bouts of heat stroke to complete the journey in 1,621 days. "Sure, there were times that I thought my life was in danger," he says. "But I was also touched by the kindness of people." His goal is to cross every continent on foot.

Giza pyramid and sphinx have been restored
Nevine El-Aref , Thursday 6 Nov 2014
The courtyard in front of the sphinx and the pyramid of King Khafre will be opened on Sunday after three years of restoration.
Prime Minister Ibrahim Mahlab and Minister of Antiquities Mamdouh El-Damaty will present at the ceremony at the Giza plateau.
The antiquities ministry restored the two sites as part of their project to preserve Egypt’s heritage and promote tourism to the country.
Restorers consolidated the northern side of the statue which includes a large part of the Sphinx's left shoulder and neck.
"The sphinx is now safe and sound and will greet visitors to the Giza plateau after being hidden under scaffoldings for almost three years," El-Damaty told Ahram Online. He added that the restoration took place using new blocks, inserted to consolidate those added during last century's restoration.
Erosion factors were the main reason that led to the deterioration of the blocks, said El-Damaty adding that cracks have been spread over it.
He told Ahram Online that the courtyard in front of the Sphinx is to be open for the first time ever.
The courtyard, El-Damaty pointed out, was closed many years ago and was never open to the public.
"A separate ticket than the one for the plateau is required for those who want to be face-to-face with the great sphinx," El-Damaty told Ahram Online.
The sphinx has been restored several times in its history, most recently for a ten-year span starting in the 1990s.
Khafre's pyramid will be open to visitors after a new lighting system to light its corridors was installed.
El-Damaty said that the lack of budget was behind the delay in the completion of Khafre's pyramid restoration which took three years instead of one year.
According to the ministry's rotation plan, one pyramid of the three pyramids of Giza will be closed every year for restoration.

Have you been to the Egyptian museum in Tahrir before and had to leave your camera before entering the museum building?
It has been a long time since photography was allowed in the museum which hosts the largest collection of the ancient Egyptian antiquities.
At a press conference held at the Grand Egyptian museum, minister of antiquities Dr. Mamdouh El Damaty announced a big surprise for the Egyptology buffs and visitors to Egypt.
The Minister of Antiquities said "For the Christmas holiday season, photography with no flash will be allowed in the Egyptian museum in Tahrir for all visitors starting from 1st of December 2015 till 7th of January 2016."

The restoration of King Tutankhamun's world-famous golden mask will begin Saturday, over a year after the beard was accidentally broken off and hastily glued back with epoxy, Egypt's state-run news agency said Friday.
A German-Egyptian team will remove the mask from its display at the Egyptian Museum in Cairo and repair it in another area of the museum, MENA reported.
The 3,300-year-old burial pharaonic mask was discovered in Tutankhamun's tomb along with other artifacts by British archeologists in 1922, sparking worldwide interest in archaeology and ancient Egypt.
The beard became detached during work on the relic's lighting in August 2014 and then was hastily reattached with epoxy.
In a January press conference by Egypt's antiquities ministry, days after the botched reattachment came to light, restoration specialist Christian Eckmann said the epoxy could be removed and the mask properly restored.
Eckmann said the beard had likely loosened over the years and has been detached previously.
The mask is arguably the best-known piece in the museum, one of Cairo's main tourist sites, which was built in 1902 and houses artifacts and mummies of ancient Egyptian rulers.

The Egyptian Museum will mark its 113th anniversary next Monday and locals and foreigners living in the country will be offered free entry to mark the special occasion, according to antiquities and museum officials.
The measure comes as part of the ministry’s interest in boosting tourism, Antiquities Minister Mamdouh al-Damati said in statements quoted by local media.
Khaled al-Anani, the museum’s general supervisor, was also quoted as saying that the ministry’s celebrations will begin at 9:30 a.m.
The celebration will include performances and the museum’s past directors will be honored in the presence of public dignitaries and university students. He added that volunteer tour guides will guide visitors for free.

Egypt's first airport museum is to open tomorrow at Cairo International Airport’s Terminal 3
Nevine El-Aref , Sunday 6 Dec 2015
Egypt's Ministry of Antiquities Mamdouh Eldamaty is to open tomorrow evening a small museum in the transit hall at Cairo International Airport's Terminal 3.
Eldamaty told Ahram Online that the museum was established in an attempt to promote tourism and Egypt’s distinguished civilisational history.
Elham Salah, head of the Museums Section at the antiquities ministry, told Ahram Online that the museum includes 38 artefacts carefully selected from different museums around Egypt, including the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir, the Coptic Museum in Old Cairo and the Museum of Islamic Art in Bab Al-Khalq area.
Salah explained that the displayed objects show the daily life of ancient Egyptians as well as their religious beliefs. The Islamic era is presented through a collection of lamps, plates, chandeliers and a copy of the Quran, while the Coptic era is shown through a collection of objects depicting religious rituals inside cathedrals, along with Coptic manuscripts.
A copy of the Holy Bible is also exhibited.
Salah said that the airport museum is meant to not only attract travellers who are visiting Egypt, but also those transiting through the airport. She pointed out that museum tickets cost $3 for foreigners and LE25 for Egyptians.

Egypt put the restored gold mask of Tutankhamun back on display Wednesday after German experts removed glue applied in a botched repair when the priceless artifact's beard fell off.
The restored mask -- now back in its display case at the museum -- was shown to journalists after more than two months' work by a team of German experts.
"It is done," Christian Eckmann, a German specialist in restoration work on antiquities in glass and metal, told reporters at a press conference.
The beard fell off the boy pharaoh's funerary mask in August 2014 at the Egyptian Museum in Cairo, and employees tried to reattach it with glue.
The accident happened when the mask was removed from its display case to repair the lighting.
In a hurried attempt to fix it, museum workers applied too much epoxy glue, leaving a visible crust.
The restoration included a 3D scan of the mask and removing the beard once more.
"The most challenging process was to remove the beard. We did it by mechanical means... using wooden tools," Eckmann said.
The process included warming the mask to enable the adhesive to be removed.
The boy king's death mask is a top attraction at the museum, which has hundreds of items from the tomb found in 1922 by British archaeologist Howard Carter along with the pharaoh's mummy in Luxor's Valley of the Kings.
When Carter discovered the treasure, the ceremonial beard was already loose and he himself removed it for the first time, Eckmann said.
"Ninety years after Carter accomplished the first restoration of the mask in December 1925, we have the pleasure to present the mask in its original" form, he said.
Tutankhamun died aged 19 in 1324 BC after reigning for nine years. His 11-kilo (24.2-pound) solid gold funerary mask is encrusted with lapis lazuli and semi-precious stones.
The bus's right-side window was shattered, though no casualties were reported among the tourists

A tourist bus was hit by fireworks during a rally by Muslim Brotherhood supporters early on Thursday in Al-Haram Street near Giza pyramids, according to Egypt's Ministry of Interior.
The incident occurred when approximately 15 Brotherhood supporters fired fireworks at security forces outside the Three Pyramids hotel where the bus was transporting tourists, according to interior ministry spokesperson Abu Bakr Abdel Karim.
There were no reported casualties, according to the spokesperson.
The bus's right side window was shattered and the hotel's facade damaged.
The passengers on the bus were Arab-Israeli citizens, according to a statement released by the Israeli government.
One suspect was arrested at the scene and is currently being investigated for his involvement in the incident.
Al-Haram Street in Giza, close to the Pyramids, regularly witnesses pro-Morsi rallies and protests.

Gunmen open fire on tourist bus outside Cairo hotel
No casualties reported in attack on a road leading to the pyramids in the Egyptian capital.

Tourists were attacked by gunmen on a motorcycle as they boarded a bus outside their hotel in the Egyptian capital of Cairo.
Thursday's attack took place outside the Three Pyramids Hotel which is situated on a road leading to the pyramids, according to security sources who added that there were no casualties.
One gunman was arrested at the scene while security forces surrounded the other in another part of Cairo, according to sources.
Tourism is a pillar of the Egyptian economy which has been struggling to recover from political turmoil triggered by the 2011 uprising that toppled former president Hosni Mubarak.
Egypt declared it would step up security at major tourist attractions last year after several attacks that caused its already struggling tourism industry to slump further.
In June, two policemen were shot dead close to the pyramids.
President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, who took power after ousting the country's first democratically elected president Mohamed Morsi in 2013, has declared an all-out war on armed groups.
From December until 7 January, visitors to the Egyptian Museum in central Cairo were allowed to take pictures with cameras and mobile phones inside the museum without paying additional fees, to attract more visitors to the museum that houses countless treasures from Ancient Egypt, including Tutankhamun's mummy and death mask.

Japan's ambassador to Egypt and his wife paid their first visit to King Khufu's second solar boat
Nevine El-Aref , Sunday 21 Feb 2016
Japanese ambassador to Egypt Takehiro Kagawa and his wife paid their first visit to King Khufu's second solar boat, now under restoration at the laboratory of the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) overlooking the Giza plateau.
Eissa Zidan, director of the restoration department at the GEM, guided them through their visit to check the restoration works being carried out by the Japanese-Egyptian team in an attempt to reconstruct King Khufu's second solar boat to its original look.
Takehiro was very happy with the works achieved so far, and wrote in the visiting book of the GEM that he wishes the team the best luck in achieving their goal.

Zidan told Ahram Online that the restoration team is now working on the third phase of the five-stage project to restore Khufu's second boat.
The first phase began over 20 years ago, when in 1992 a Japanese scientific and archaeological team from Waseda University, in collaboration with the Japanese government, offered a grant of $10 million to remove the boat from its original pit, restore and reassemble it, and put it on show to the public.
The team cleaned the pit of insects and the Japanese team inserted a camera through a hole in the chamber's limestone to assess the boat's condition inside the pit and the possibility of its restoration.
Images taken show layers of wooden beams and timbers of cedar and acacia, as well as ropes, mats and remains of limestone blocks and small pieces of white plaster.

Basel Yoshimura, the director of the Japanese team, told Ahram Online that during the team’s inspection they found that the second boat was in a much better state of preservation than the first when it was discovered in 1954 by architect and archaeologist Kamal El-Malakh, together with Zaki Nour, during routine cleaning on the south side of the Great Pyramid.
The first boat was removed piece by piece under the supervision of master restorer Ahmed Youssef, who spent more than 20 years restoring and reassembling the boat.
The second boat remained sealed in its pit until 1987, when it was examined by the American National Geographic Society by remote camera. After the space inside the pit was photographed and air measurements were taken, the pit was resealed.
It was thought that the pit had been so well sealed that the air inside would be as it had been since ancient Egyptian times. Sadly though, Yoshimura pointed out that this was not the case. Air had leaked into the pit from outside and mixed with the air inside. This had allowed insects to thrive and negatively affect some wooden beams.

FREE ENTRY INTO EGYPTIAN MUSEUMS FOR INTERNATIONAL MUSEUM DAY
17/05/2016 18:25
May 18th is International Museum Day, and once again Egypt has decided to graciously grant free entry to all visitors to celebrate the occasion.
Whether you know it or not, May 18th marks International Museum Day, and to celebrate Egypt will be granting free entry for all locals and visitors.
According to a statement made by head of the Antiquities Ministry's museums sector, Elham Salah, museums across om el donia will be opening their doors and offering free entry to all visitors. Giving a free pass to museums is not new, as Egypt traditionally offers free entry on internationally recognised cultural and heritage days.
The hope is that offering free entry will encourage more Egyptians to take the time to appreciate their impressive and historic culture.

Egypt is inaugurating its largest on-site antiquities laboratory, to restore the second ceremonial boat of Pharaoh Cheops, known for building the largest of Egypt's iconic pyramids.
The project, funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency and the Higashi Nippon International University, is set to complete the initial phase of repairs of the 4,500-year-old vessel by 2020.
Eissa Zeidan, head of the project's Egyptian restoration team, told The Associated Press that the lab, at the site of the Giza pyramids, was necessary for some of the boat's 1,264 pieces, which are too fragile or large to move.
The vessel and its sister boat, on display near the Great Pyramid, were discovered in 1954 and are believed to have been buried with the pharaoh to carry him into the afterlife.
