さて、アインシュタインの論文ですが、マイケルソンの実験がエーテルを否定した後で、それなら電磁波はどういう仕組みで伝わるのかが書かれているか、という視点で読んでみました。そして、私が理解した限りでは、それは全体の半分あたり、英訳では「Even without delving into〜」で始まり、「〜P2 are essentially inverse processes」まで続く箇所ではないかと思われます。
ここで言っていることは、光波動説(英訳では「oscillation theory」)では、媒質問題以外にも、説明できない事実が多く、光粒子説(同じく「emission theory」)の方が真実に近い、ということでしょう。とりわけ「Consider the laws governing〜」で始まる、X線が金属板に当たると電子線が飛び出すという一節は光電効果の話ですし、電磁波の粒子的性質が電磁波が伝わる仕組みを説明するなら、アジモフやウィキペディア記事と同じです。つまりこれは量子論の話なのです。
"ponderable matter" というキーワードは"想定可能物質"とでもいうか、直接観測できない仮想的物質(エーテルやダークマターやニュートリノや電子や)の反対語を示しているようです。
ニュートンの"action at a distance"ないし"distant forces"を"contact forces"として説明するためのエーテル理論の話も冒頭に出てますね。
ただし私自身は、エーテルを不要にしたのは、あくまでも量子論だったと考えています。この点はアジモフの文章を紹介しましたが、もう1つ、2000年頃シカゴ郊外の書店で購入した「Way Science Works」(科学ライターのMarek Walisiewiczが編集責任者)の中の「Action at a distance」という項目からの抜粋を転記します。
Forces seem to be able to act across empty space, almost as if interacting particles were "aware" of each other. It is now thought that each of the four fundamental forces is transmitted by a messenger particle. This flies between two particles, carrying the force which acts on the recipient particle, just as a catcher recoils with the momentum of a thrown ball. Protons and neutrons influence each other via strong nuclear force, carried by gluons. Two negatively charged electrons repel one another via the electromagnetic force, carried by short-lived photons.
少なくとも冒頭では理論ではないと書いてありますよ。アインシュタインの発想だったとは初耳でしたが、 [Naturwissenschaften. 23 (48): 807–812]でシュレジンガー本人が書いているのでしょうかね?
