On August 18th, 2008, H.E. Mr Kaoru Ishikawa, the Ambassador of Japan to Egypt, and Dr Mohamed Gamal, Chairman of an Egyptian NGO, signed a contract for Japanese Grant Assistance for Grassroots Projects.
Economic difficulties force many children to work, depriving them of access to primary education and the opportunity of getting better jobs. Assiut Businessmen's Association has been developing a project whereby a teacher and a social worker will travel around Assiut and Sohag in a vehicle installed with educational equipment, such as desks and chairs, to offer these working children primary education and healthcare. As stipulated by the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, every child has the right to receive an education and to be protected from economic exploitation and forced labour interfering with education. This project, Japan believes, will not only offer working children the chance to learn how to read, write and calculate while earning their daily living, but will also give them hope in a better future. The Japanese Government decided to contribute to this project by donating a mobile school vehicle. By virtue of the contract, the Embassy of Japan has extended a grant of $57,500 for the provision of a mobile school vehicle for working children with the NGO.The signing ceremony took place at 3pm last Monday at the Embassy of Japan. The Japanese Government's Assistance Scheme for Grassroots and Human Security Projects was launched in Egypt in 1994 and 116 projects had already been implemented by the end of March this year, totalling about $4.55 million. In particular, the flexibility and timely manner of this scheme have been widely appreciated. For more details, kindly refer to the Embassy of Japan homepage at URL: www.eg.emb-japan.go.jp

A Japanese man is walking with a cart 11,000km (6,800 miles) across the length of Africa - only a year after completing a round-the-world trek in the same manner.
Masahito Yoshida, 33, of Tottori left the Egyptian port city of Alexandria on Sunday on his journey to the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa, the Japan Times newspaper reports. He's taking everything he needs - around 100kg (220lb) of water, food, cooking utensils and a tent - in a two-wheeled cart that he pulls behind him.
His route will take him through Sudan, Ethiopia and Tanzania along the way - a journey encompassing deserts, savannah grasslands and high mountains. "I am excited about meeting people and animals in places that will be passed by if you travel by train or bus," Yoshida says.
If he makes it, Yoshida will have added another continent to his current tally of four. The 44,000km round-the-globe trip he finished in June 2013 took him across Europe, Asia, North America and Australia. Yoshida overcame immigration bureaucracy, theft, and several bouts of heat stroke to complete the journey in 1,621 days. "Sure, there were times that I thought my life was in danger," he says. "But I was also touched by the kindness of people." His goal is to cross every continent on foot.

Cairo Japanese film festival begins 15 February - Daily News Egypt ht
tp://shar.es/1WmoxN @DailyNewsEgyptさんから
Seven masterpieces of Japanese cinema, never before shown in Egypt, are set to treat Egyptian cinephiles at the annual Japanese film festival premiering on 15 February.
The festival’s theme is “Renewed Hopes”, and features a variety of film-making styles from boxing action drama “Tomorrow’s Joe to the Calm”, subtly paced “Kamome Diner”, about a trio of Japanese women opening a restaurant in Finland.
Masakazu Takahashi, the festival’s curator and director of the Japan Foundation, the festival’s organiser, said the theme was chosen to offer Egyptians a glimpse of overcoming political and social instability. This is particularly so in a country that has been facing such instability since the beginning of the Arab Spring, where popular protests in January 2011 saw the ouster of former president Hosni Mubarak.
Two particularly notable films in the festival were the 2010 animation “Colourful” directed by Keeichi Hara, and the 2009 sports drama “Feel the Wind”.
“Colourful” blends the trials of dejected adolescence, themes of suicide, out-of-body experiences, angels, having a greater mission in life and second chances, into a meaningful cartoon

“I think young people can sympathise with the main characters life, trying to take the purpose to live,” said Takahashi. He noted that the film was a lesson in learning to understand life’s changes and dealing with problems more proactively.
“Feel the Wind” focuses on a group of ten college runners competing in a uniquely Japanese athletic event known as the Ekiden, a relay race ran by a ten man team along the distance of a marathon. The actual competition, Takahashi says, is gruelling, and the film has a very “moving” portrayal of friendship and team work under pressure, a lesson he hopes Egyptian viewers will relate to currently.
Though none of films are political in nature, Takahashi said: “I hope Egyptians will find a new future”. He also said he hoped that it would establish a stable situation, though he did not endorse any form of politics or activism, just a wish that the films would help Egyptians to rebuild their country.
The office of the Japan Foundation is in only a few blocks away from the “hot spot” of Tahrir Square, which has seen popular protests and clashes. Takahashi hopes that, as well as the films giving a deeper understanding of Japanese culture and presenting “a unique Japanese viewpoint”, the festival offers a different point of view for Egyptians to overcome their present problems facing the country.
The Japanese film festival will be happening at The Artistic Creativity Centre at the Cairo Operain Zamalek.

In light of the special sections dedicated to Japanese animation at the Cairo International Film Festival, Ahram Online explores the themes and importance of Studio Ghibli films
Menna Taher, Saturday 14 Nov 2015
I have a keychain of the fantastical creature Totoro, the giant rabbit-mouse-like creature that is the emblem of Japan’s Studio Ghibli.
Having Totoro in my bag all day is a constant reminder of what the animated film My Neighbour Totoro represents to me; being in touch with my childhood self. It is also a reminder of what is really important in life; family.
My Neighbour Totoro is by far one of my favourite movies of all time, even if artistically and even plot-wise it is not the best Ghibli film.
The first time I saw My Neighbour Totoro I thought it was a sweet movie and I liked the character of Totoro, and that was all. It was the second time I watched it that it dawned on me how profound and insightful it is. I simply fell in love with it.
Japanese animation
It was indeed a very pleasant surprise to see that Ghibli’s films are screening in the Cairo International Film Festival. However, as the section is titled Spotlight on Japanese Animated Movies, one has to wonder why only Ghibli films are shown.
Ghibli and its founder Hayao Miyazaki are somewhat well-known in Egypt as the films Spirited Away and Howl’s Moving Castle have been shown often on Showtime cable, so showing films that are not so well-known here could have been an interesting addition. However, there is much more to Japanese animation than the films of Studio Ghibli.
Makoto Shinkai, for instance, is a great animator, and his film 5 Cm Per Second is one of the most emotional and poetic animated films I have seen.
Films by Satoshi Kon are also very distinctive and mind-bending. In Paprika, he explores the world of dreams from an incredibly unique perspective.
Wolf Children by Mamoru Hosoda, a film which revolves around a mother raising her two half-human, half-wolf kids and the obstacles they face, is also one of the best animated films I have seen in recent years.
Of course, it is often not easy to obtain films for screenings, but since the section at the film festival was called Spotlight on Japanese Animated Film, I was expecting to see a larger variety of genres and animators.

Ahead of his visit to Tokyo Sunday, Egypt's president talked cooperation and regional crises - warning a collapse in Libya could allow terrorist groups to use the country as a 'springboard'
Ahram Online , Sunday 28 Feb 2016
Egypt's President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi aims to send 100,000 Egyptian students to study in Japan, he told Japanese news outlet The Asahi Shimbun.
The interview was conducted last week in Cairo but published on Saturday.
El-Sisi said that he hopes Egypt could benefit from cooperation with Japan in education, saying that Tokyo's educational system "stresses discipline."
During his trip to Japan, where he is expected to arrive later on Sunday following a two-day visit to Kazakhstan, El-Sisi is set to meet with senior officials including Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Emperor Akihito.
Egypt's president will also meet the head of the Japan International Cooperation Agency, Tokyo's governor, and will give a speech in front of the Japanese parliament on Monday.
"Gravest danger for all humanity"
During his interview with The Asahi Shimbun, El-Sisi said the US-led international coalition against IS group in Syria and Iraq "has been ongoing for more than one year, but [IS group] activities has not declined."
He described the spread of terrorist groups such as the IS group as the "gravest danger for all humanity."
Egypt supports the US-led coalition against the IS group but has not taken part in its military operations.
Some of Egypt's regional allies, including Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and Jordan are part of the US-led coalition.
On the Libya crisis, the president said "If Libya collapses it could act as a springboard for terrorism to expand to neighbouring countries such as Tunisia, Algeria, Egypt and even outside to Europe."
"Our strategy is to protect our own soil - we will continue our fight against terrorism and will not interfere in the internal affairs of any other states," El-Sisi added, ruling out any Egyptian military intervention in Libya.
More than years after the fall of Libyan president Muammar Gaddafi, Libya is deeply fractured, with a self-declared government in Tripoli and an internationally recognised government in the east – each backed by coalitions of former rebels and militias.
Egypt will sign three concessional loan agreements with Japan and one with South Korea worth a total of $575 million to finance projects in energy and transportation, an official source familiar with the matter told Ahram Online on Sunday.
The signing of the financial deals comes as part of Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi’s third tour to Asia, which started on Friday.
The loans will be at interest rates of less than one percent, to be repaid over a period of 50 years, including a 10-year grace period.
Japan's lending package includes a $155 million loan to expand Egypt's Borg Al-Arab airport, located about 50km southwest of Alexandria, said an official from Egypt’s International Cooperation Ministry on condition of anonymity.
The package will also include $305 million to boost the capacity of three state-owned electricity distribution companies and for the construction of a 20-MW photovoltaic station in the coastal city of Hurghada on the Red Sea.
“Egypt will also negotiate with Japan preliminary financial pledges of $482 million for the ongoing construction of the Grand Egyptian Museum in Giza and $335 million for power generation projects,” said the source.
Seoul will witness the signing of the first South Korean loan to Egypt during El-Sisi's visit, worth $115 million to finance an upgrade of the railway signalling system between the Qena and Luxor governorates in Upper Egypt.
2,500 Egyptians to be given annual scholarships from Japan: Presidency ht

The government of Japan will issue annual scholarships for 2,500 Egyptian students and interns for five years in order to develop Egyptian human resources and enhance their skills, Egypt's presidency said in a statement on Monday amid an ongoing visit by President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi to Tokyo.
In an interview with Japanese news outlet Asahi Shimbun published on Saturday, El-Sisi said that he aims to send 100,000 Egyptian students to study in Japan, saying that Tokyo's educational system "stresses discipline."
El-Sisi, who is on a three-nation Asian tour, held talks on Sunday with senior Japanese officials including Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Emperor Akihito, and gave a speech in front of the Japanese parliament on Monday.
Egypt will sign three concessional loan agreements with Japan, including a $155 million loan to expand Egypt's Borg Al-Arab Airport, located about 50km southwest of Alexandria, a source from Egypt’s International Cooperation Ministry told Ahram Online on Sunday.

Pope Tawadros is set to open the first Coptic church in Japan during his visit.
The visit will be followed by a second stop in Australia, where the Pope will attend a number of Coptic activities in several Australian cities, as well as meeting a number of Australian officials.
On his way to Japan, Pope Tawadros had a transit stop in Dubai where he met a number of Egyptian diplomats as well as Coptic priests.
In May, the Egyptian Coptic Pope conducted a European tour that included Italy and the UK.
