私が特別高い教科書を選んだというわけでもないらしい。アマゾンで一番売れている学部向けの微積分の教科書、J.Stewartの"Calculus: Early Transcendentals"も273ドルだ。この本はかなり分厚いし内容もまともだが、あくまで標準的な微積分の内容で特に凝った本ではない。ちなみに、日本のアマゾンで一番売れていると思われる微積の入門書である杉浦光夫の解析入門 (1)は、私のが学生時代とほとんど変わらず3000円程度なので、いつの間にか日米の教科書価格は10倍も開いてしまった。
プログラム教育の対極の原理主義の極致は、1960年代のアメリカの new math 運動ですね。
足し算引き算は代数学の一部であり、代数学は群論のごく特殊な一例に過ぎず、その群論
の基礎を形成するのは集合論であるから、理数系教育の根本的かつ最重要な原理として
小学校の算数の授業を公理的集合論の公理系の理解から始めて大失敗の巻の。
ここまで書いて自分で「原理主義」に違和感
「日本では、みんな横並び、単線型の教育ばかりを行ってきました。
小学校6年、中学校3年、高校3年の後、理系学生の半分以上が、工学部の研究室に入る。こればかりを繰り返してきたのです。
しかし、そうしたモノカルチャー型の高等教育では、斬新な発想は生まれません。」、そして続けて
「だからこそ、私は、教育改革を進めています。学術研究を深めるのではなく、もっと社会のニーズを見据えた、もっと実践的な、職業教育を行う。そうした新たな枠組みを、高等教育に取り込みたいと考えています。
(Rather than deepening academic research that is highly theoretical, we will conduct more practical vocational
education that better anticipates the needs of society. I intend to incorporate that kind of new framework into higher education.)」と述べている。
まともな科学者なら、これを読んだらこの国の科学はおしまいだと思うだろう。
もちろん原稿は、優秀な内閣府の官僚が書いたのだと思う。知識をひけらかす才気紛々とした原稿だ。
しかし「Rather than deepening academic research that is highly theoretical(極めて理論的な学術研究を深めるのではなく)」
といったフレーズを平気で使える官僚が日本の高等教育政策を担っているのかと思うと暗澹たる気持ちになる。
