[1] バイエル初中級 No.170(b)
Dogs are a man's best friend. (犬は人間にとって最良の友人です。)
について疑問があるのでみなさまの感覚を聞かせていただけませんでしょうか? 主語が複数で述語が単数というアンバランスさがつたえる
ニュアンスはなんだとおもいますか?「大西泰斗のイメージ英文法応用編」EBF B PART V CHAPTER1 単数と複数(UNIT 68)と関わってくるとおもっています。A dog is a man's best friend. との違いが知りたいです。(「英語のバイエル初中級から」のスレッドでニャンコヴィッチさんに相談に乗っていただきましたが、長くなったのもあり、みなさんのご意見がききたいので、新しくスレッドをたてました。)
また、これについていくつか調べました。
google で調べると、主語と述語のそれぞれの組み合わせで
Dogs are, A dog is, The dog is
man's best friend, 245000, 1070000, 71400
the man's best friend, 169000, 4360, 5080
man's best friends, 33100, 5, 1
a man's best friend, 32300, 139000, 52700
こんなヒット数になりました。
ノンネイティブの意見をはぶこうとおもって、 site:uk をつけて検索すると、
Dogs are, A dog is, The dog is
man's best friend 448, 45900, 10200
the man's best friend 0, 0, 2
man's best friends 1060, 0, 0
a man's best friend 6820, 1020, 1
こうなりました。
ゼロにちかいヒット数の組み合わせはかなり特殊な意味に
なるか、文法的におかしいものだと思います。
[2]そういうわけで、犬は人間にとって最良の友人です、と言いたいときに
ネイティブはこれらのなかから自分が言いたいことに一番近いものを選択しているのだと思います。
(1) Dogs are man's best friend.
(2) A dog is man's best friend.
(3) The dog is man's best friend.
(4) The dog is the man's best friend.
(5) Dogs are man's best friends.
(6) Dogs are a man's best friend.
(7) A dog is a man's best friend.
(8) The dog is a man's best friend.
みなさんはこれらのニュアンスの違いをどのようにおもいますか? friendに形があるのかないのか、つまり可算か非可算か、つまり man's は限定詞と思っていい場合があるのか? というのが
ポイントになると思っています。
Subjects agree with their verb.
Children may resemble both their father and their mother in different ways.
こういった例文もDiderotさんにとって同じひとまとまりの感覚ですか??
・Subjects agree with their verb.
(Practical English Usage (Michael Swan著) 530 distributive pluralより)
・Subjects agree with their verbs.
(きわむ作文)
この2文のニュアンスの違いはどのように感じますか?
ひとまとまりという観点だけではこの2つは区別できないと思うので、もう少しDiderotさんの感覚を教えていただけるとうれしいです。
friendが明らかに形容詞的な感じで使われている他の用例がありましたら、お時間のあるときに教えていただけるとうれしいです。(この話題は、私の中で、 I am a French student. とI am French student.の違い(後者が正しい文なのかもわからないけれど)につながっています。)
(8) The dog is a man's best friend.
a)Dogs are a man's best friend.とb)A dog is a man's best friend.の違いについて言えば、a) は主語(動詞)と補語の単複が一致しておりません。今回の単複が一致しない場合、私は、一匹一匹について厳密に、くどくどと細かく伝えたいという意図を感じますが、単複の不一致にパーヤンさんはどのような感覚を抱きますか?

次に気になるのが無冠詞の例です。

主語が単数補語が複数
Is that Jimmy and Miki over there? They are laughing hard about something.

>これもBBCですが、一般的な犬を語る文脈だと思います。
>どうおもわれますか?
They say that the dog is man's best friend
but it seems that in ancient times it was the goat that played this role.
New genetic evidence suggests that goats travelled around the world
with early farmers, serving as a walking milk supply and a tool for bartering.
だから
the dog is man's friendsとして一般的な犬を単に想定しないで下さい、

it was the goat that played this role.
の「the goat」も、一般的な山羊を想定しないで下さい、ってことですか。
古代の人が思う山羊は、現代人の思う山羊より「範囲は狭まる」とは思えませんけど。
それに、すぐ下の
New genetic evidence suggests that goats travelled around the world with early farmers…
の「goats」はその「なんらかの制約や範囲」が外されているんですか。
文脈からすると、どちらも人に飼われていた同じ範囲の山羊にみえますけど。
the dog、the goat とすることで、「犬」や「山羊」の"範疇内"で「なんらかの制約や範囲」を設けているとは思えません。
the dog とか the goat って、「犬というものは」とか「山羊というものは」ってぐらいのニュアンスだと思うのですが。
>it was the goat that played this role.
>の「the goat」も、一般的な山羊を想定しないで下さい、ってことですか。
そうです。そしてわかりやすい例を持ち出していただきました。
>it was the goat that played this role.
>New genetic evidence suggests that goats travelled around the world with early farmers...
の文章がどういったヤギの話かということに焦点はなく、
ヤギがどうであったのかに焦点が移っているから限定詞theがつかないと考えます。
New genetic evidence suggests that the goat travelled around the world with early farmers…
となると犬の役割を担っているヤギもしくは話題に上がった、犬と比較されるべきヤギというものを想定してしまいます。
「However I sometimes found a sentence like "Elephants have a long trunk". This kind of sentence is almost always followed by a clause or sentence that explains about the trunk in details. I am wondering if the writers would use intentionally this kind of numerically imbalanced subject-object relation in order to focus readers' attention upon the object. Am I right?」
ただ、これにはだれも返事をくれていないみたいですが。。。
---------------------
They say that the dog is man's best friend
この文脈ならthe dogは納得です。これは一般的な犬といっても、やはりなんらかの制約や範囲の中での「一般的な」という話になると思います。

想定していいんじゃないですか。
っていうか、話の流れとして想定しなきゃだめなんでしょう?
They say that the dog is man's best friend
but it seems that in ancient times it was the goat that played this role.
New genetic evidence suggests that goats travelled around the world
with early farmers, serving as a walking milk supply and a tool for bartering.
(1)They say that the dog is man's best friend
…と説明するときのイメージは、犬や猫や馬や山羊の、それぞれ"一匹づつ”の絵が並んでいるスライド(1)を使ってるようなものです。
「「犬」は…」と言うとき、話者は支持棒で「犬」の絵を指して、「「山羊」だ…」と言うときは「山羊」の絵を指す。
それで、
(2)New genetic evidence suggests that goats travelled around the world with early farmers,

以下に引用しておきますが、「In generalizations and rules, singular and plural nouns are both possible.」「Mixtures of singular and plural are possible.」とその前に説明があるという理由です。「generalisations や rules においては単数と複数の両方とも使用することができます。ひとつの文の中での混合も可能です」というように私は読み取りました。だから今回のきわむ作文はおかしくないと思っています。どうおもわれますか?

530 singular and plural (8) : distributive plural
3 generalisations and rules
In generalizations and rules, singular and plural nouns are both possible.
We use a past participle in a perfect verb form. (OR We use past participles in perfect verb forms.)
All documents must be accompanied by a translation of the original.
Mixtures of singular and plural are possible.
Subjects agree with their verb.
Children may resemble both their father and mother in different ways.
This often happens with fixed singular expressions like “at the beginning.”
Discourse markers usually come at the beginning of sentences.

We drank, talked, and dances.
のように動詞が複数ある文もあります。
でも、これはそういう話ではないと思います。
この文は「主語と動詞は一致する」という単純な意味を伝えたい文だと思います。一つの文の中に主語や動詞が一つあるのか複数あるのかという問題を主題にした文ではないと思うのです。今回のきわむ作文はおかしくないと思いますが、どう思われますか?

Be my friend.

>A subject agrees with its verbs.
>という表現でもよくなりませんか。でも、これって変ですよね。
変ですね。ただ、「ORの記述がないからSubjects agree with their verbs.が不自然」と
読み取れなくはないとも思いますが、同様に、不自然とも言い切れないと思っています。
どちらについても明確には記載されていないからです。この例文が可と言っているだけです。
そういった状況の中で、Subjects agree with their verbs.
Subjects agree with their verbs.
