Republicans are trying to suppress the vote wherever they can, even in my home state of Michigan, Takeshi.
Michigan state legislators have already introduced 62 -- yes 62 -- anti-voter bills this year. From removing ballot drop boxes to banning prepaid postage on absentee ballots, these bills are simply the GOP’s way of creating barriers to make it harder for folks to vote.
I promised to veto this package if it lands on my desk, but not every state has a Democratic governor as its last line of defense. Just look at Georgia, where Republican Governor Kemp signed a bill into law that criminalizes handing out water to voters waiting in line. Or Texas, where Governor Abbott promised to call as many special sessions as necessary to pass a slate of anti-voter bills.
It is critical that we continue our fight to elect Democrats nationwide who will protect the fundamental right to vote, and the DNC is key to that goal. They’re running programs that embed voter protection experts in states, support organizers on the ground, and help provide campaigns with top-notch data. But to sustain these initiatives through Election Day, they’re relying on this grassroots team.
