僕は"as soon as"の固まりには見えないですね。
I came "as soon as" I heard the news.
こうではなく、
"I came" "as soon" "as I heard the news."
こう見えます。
結局"I came"ですよね。それにasでポンポン説明が加えられていますよね。
"as soon"ってだけで、同時ではないでしょう。
１．
He is as wise as any man. は「彼は誰よりも[とても]賢い」と辞書（ジーニアス）にはありますが、
「誰よりも賢い」とも解釈できるのは、He≧any man だから。
２．
a shop selling clothes at competitive prices（＝as low as any other shop）
と、oxford advanced learner's dictionary, 7th edition にはありました。
かつ、competitive を同じ辞書で確認すると、
as good as or better than others とあり、
従って、
a shop selling clothes at competitice prices
≒a shop selling clothes as low as any other shops
≒a shop selling clothes as low as or lower than any other shops
となります。
つまり、a shop≧any other shopsとなります。

ジーニアスには、
as sweet as honey＝sweeter than honey「とてもかわいい」とあります。
単なる比喩表現でしょうけれども、やはり「A ≧ B」の感覚が生きているように思います。

最上級と等価の表現ともされる以下の２つはほぼ同じ意味を表すとされます。
No other boy is taller than Jim.
≒No other boy is as tall as Jim.
ここでは、taller than≒as tall as となっています。
１１０さんやパーヤンさんの仰るところのイメージは鮮明ですが、
それだけであると、なぜ「A≧B」となるのかがいまひとつ不明となるように思います。
２についても
a shop selling clothes at competitive prices（＝as low as any other shop）
他のどのショップであってもそれと同程度の低価格・競争価格であるけれども
決してat the same prices (in any other shop)ではないわけです。
そしてここでもあるショップと他のショップの価格がどっちが高いか低いかという話題ではなく
あるショップについて、例え他のどのショップを引き合いに出しても同程度の低価格（同額の低価格ではなく）
