私の感覚では、 make the most of something は、COBUILD にも get the maximum use / advantage from it とあるように、 make bricks (out) of clay （粘土からレンガを作る）と同じ形で、材料 (something) から (of) 最大限 (the most) をコネコネする (make) という感じです。無冠詞の most of という表現とは違うような気がします。
『ランダムハウス英語辞典』の例、 (1) make the most of an opportunity 機会を最大限に活用する、 (2) The ambassador made the most of the state guest. 大使は国賓を丁重に遇した.、 (3) He made the most of her good figure. 彼女の姿の美しさを精いっぱい褒めたてた.、 をながめてみると、「コネコネ」の意味は文脈によりますが、どれも「材料」から「最大限」のものを引き出していることがうかがえます。
