海外駐在者にとって、物価が高く、世界中で最も生活にお金がかかる都市とは――?
Mercer Human Resource Consultingが2007年6月に発表した「Worldwide Cost of Living Survey 2007」によると、“海外駐在者にとって最もコストがかかる都市”は、前年に引き続きモスクワであることが分かった。第2位は、前年度の調査から3ランク上昇したロンドン、第3位は1ランクダウンしたソウル。日本人はもちろん、海外からの旅行者や駐在者にも「物価が高い」と悪評高い印象のある東京は、4位に留まっている。
Mercer Human Resource Consultingはそのほか、「Quality of Living Survey」という調査も行っている。最も住みやすい都市を、犯罪率や教育水準、交通機関やライフラインの整備の度合い、住環境、自然環境などの諸要素を加味して順位づけしたものだ。2007年の調査によれば、物価の高さで7位と9位に入っているジュネーブとチューリッヒが、それぞれ2位と1位。ランキング6位のコペンハーゲンも11位となっており、物価の高さのみで暮らしやすいか否かが決まるわけではないことが良く分かる。
バンクーバー
バンクーバーには10月に行った。紅葉が始まる時期で、バンクーバーの都会の雰囲気とまわりの紅葉の森林の対比がとても美しかった。自然と都市とが調和して発展している、という感じだ。偶然だったのかもしれないが、店の店員の応対もどこでも良かった。CAMRA (CAMpaign for Real Ale:エールというタイプのビールを保護、育成する消費者団体)のバンクーバー支部(どうやら勝手に作ったらしいが)の会長にもお会いしたが、とてもやさしい人であった。食材が豊富だから、食べ物も美味しく、北アメリカのワイン作りの北限でもある。一度だけしか行っていないので、バンクーバーをもっと知りたい、と思う。
