The hope here is that the combination of conventional junctions and π-junctions in a single circuit may make it possible to design so-called ‘quiet’ qubits.
Those quiet qubits don’t require any external magnetic field for their operation. Accordingly, quiet qubits may be easier to de-couple from the environment.
However, a reliable technology for π-junctions has never been found out ( in 2003 ).
