Hi everyone, After reading this thread, I asked the question to the cab driver on my way to a meeting. He told me the same thing Toshi had posted:

タコメはたぶん間違いなく「タコ(メータ)グラフ」ですね。
「空く」つまりエンジンがアイドリング状態であるためタコメーターに振れがなく、
メーター表にジグザグした線のない空白部分ができることを「タコメが空く」と表現したのでしょうね。
