Kidnap effect and hostage diplomacy: Opinion
Three American and British hostages were kidnapped recently in Iraq. Failing in their demand for the release of women prisoners kept in Abu Ghraib and Umm Qasr prisons the kidnappers beheaded two Americans. Ishaq Manzoor, for Jaish-e-Muslimeen, speaking via satellite phone from the Pakistan-Afghanistan border, added that they were “safe so far”. The Army of Muslims purports to be a hardline faction of the Taliban, Afghanistan’s former ruling group. Other reports have suggested the three hostages were kidnapped by a local warlord because of their role in organising the elections.
