今週9日にトランプ相互関税の上乗せ部分の発動停止期限を迎える。トランプ米大統領は1日に、日本が米国の自動車やコメを買ってくれないと批判し、「日本と合意できるとは思えない」と述べ、日本に対する一律関税について「30％や35％」という数字を挙げていた。そして、4日には、貿易相手国・地域に対して関税率を記した12の署名済み書簡を7日に送付すると言明した。日本に対する書簡を例に挙げて、『親愛なる日本様（Dear Mr. Japan）、日本は車に25％の関税が課されます』と示していたが、石破首相や交渉担当者の赤沢経済再生相は眼中にないらしい。
