The former sovereign seldom made use of ladies-in-waiting after becoming a monk: male attendants, whichever ones happened to be on duty, brought his meals and saw to all his other needs. He never failed to observe the rule of abstinence. The late imperial lady had performed a splendid service by inspiring him to lead such a life. He never neglected to hold daily services in her memory at the Imabayashi Mansion in Saga. (The mansion was the place where the Kitayama Honorary Empress had lived.) He used to strands of her hair to sew Sanskrit letteres; also, for dedication at the Sesshu-in, he copied passages from the Lotus Sutra??onto the backs of sheets of paper containing her handwriting, performing a triple obeisance after inscribing each character. Archbishop Kakushu acted as his spiritual guide. In further demonstration of his deep affection, he built a Lotus Hall in the Imabayashi grounds to house her remains, and went there faithfully on the 24th day of each month.
