Shark attacks are of rare occurrence in Egypt, but experts say feeding sharks and sport fishing may provoke attacks
Ahram Online , Monday 7 Aug 2017
An Austrian tourist has flown home for further medical treatment after suffering a leg injury in a shark attack in the Red Sea resort of Marsa Alam, Al-Ahram Arabic website reported on Monday.
Christine Schachinger, 20, was bitten by a shark while taking part in water sports in the Red Sea. She was rushed to a private hospital in Marsa Alam and received treatment on her right leg.
She was later transferred to Austria by private jet for further medical treatment.
Shark attacks are very rare in Egypt, with only 34 cases reported since 1827, according to the Shark Research Institute, a US-based scientific research organization.
However, environmentalists say certain actions on the part of divers and swimmers may provoke attacks.
The Society for the Rescue and Protection of the Environment of the Red Sea warns diving guides and tourists against feeding sharks or otherwise provoking them.
The organization says the Austrian tourist was probably attacked in response to such actions.
Last year, Egypt imposed a temporary ban on sport fishing and offshore swimming at Ain Sokhna on the Red Sea after a man was bitten by a shark.
At the time, officials and scientists said the attack was likely caused by a combination of fishing and swimming in the same spot.
In 2010, three shark attacks in the span of one week have left four eastern European tourists seriously injured and one German tourist dead.
Blocked media includes independent news website Mada Masr, the privately-owned Daily News Egypt, Qatar-owned news agencies Al-Jazeera, El-Sharq, Al-Raya and El-Watan, in addition to the US-based HuffPost Arabic.
There has been no official announcement or clarification from any telecommunications entities regarding the reason.
Seven alleged terrorists have been killed in an exchange of gunfire with police in central Cairo's Agouza district, an interior ministry official told state-run news agency MENA on Sunday.
The incident occurred when police attempted to raid an apartment they believed to be a terrorist hideout, with the suspects opening fire on police first, the official said.
Two policemen were also injured during the raid.
The gunmen were planning to carry out a number of terrorist attacks, according to the official, prompting police to conduct the raid.
Egypt's military and security forces have been battling various Islamist militant groups in Sinai and elsewhere, with some groups in Cairo and Giza conducting deadly attacks on security personnel.
Police frequently conduct raids on suspected terrorist hideouts, often resulting in deadly gun battles.

Egypt's security forces killed 13 high-risk terrorist elements on Friday during a raid on an abandoned ranch building located at the 47km mark on the Assiut-Al-Kharga Oasis highway, the interior ministry said in a statement.
The operation “resulted in the seizure of a large amount of arms and ammunition, including detonative charges and explosive belts, that were in the possession of the terrorist elements, who started opening fire at security forces upon their arrival at the shootout site," the statement said.
The approximate location of the raid is around 234 km south of Cairo.
“Security forces are currently working on identifying the slain terrorist elements, while the shootout resulted in some damages to a security vehicle.”
The operation comes as part of the ministry's effort to eradicate terrorist hideouts in remote areas of Giza and of Upper Egypt governorates, said the statement.
Last Friday, 16 policemen were killed and 13 were injured in a shootout with terrorists on the Wahat highway, about 135km southwest of Giza.
The interior ministry said that 11 police officers, four conscripts and one sergeant were killed in the shootout, and a search is underway for one missing police officer. Four police officers and nine conscripts were also injured.

Cairo appeals court acquitted on Tuesday famous Egyptian pop-singer Sherine Abdel-Wahab of charges of "offending Egypt" over statements she made in August 2016 about the existence of the Bilharzia parasite in the Nile River.
Sherine was originally senteneced in absentia to six months in prison in February 2018.
In August 2016, a fan asked the 37-year-old Sherine during a concert in Lebanon to perform her popular 2007 song Mashrebtesh Men Nilha? (Have You Not Drunk from Its Nile?), a patriotic song that extols Egypt's beauty.
The singer jokingly replied, “You will get Bilharzia if you do," adding, "drink Evian instead."
A video of the incident surfaced online and went viral on social media networks in Egypt, sparking controversy and anger from some fans.
The Bilharzia disease is caused by water-borne parasites living in ponds and closed streams in several of Egypt's governorates.

Cairo International Airport increased parking fees on Monday by 100 percent.
The Cairo Port Authority, which manages the entrance gates at Cairo airport's parking lots, said that different rates will be applied according to the category of vehicles.
Parking fees for taxis and privately owned cars have been set at EGP 20 for the first three hours and EGP 10 for each subsequent hour. Parking fees for a full day have been set at EGP 100.
For microbuses and pickup trucks, fees have been set at EGP 30 for the first three hours and EGP 15 for each subsequent hour, while buses and transport vehicles will be charged EGP 30 for the first three hours and EGP 20 for each subsequent hour.
Trucks and the semi-trailers will pay EGP 60 the first three hours and EGP 30 for each subsequent hour.
The increase does not apply to airport employees and workers with affiliated companies, the port authority said.
In 2016, parking fees at Cairo airport witnessed their first increase in nine years from EGP 5 to 10.
The port authority said that the new increase is due to renovations, maintenance and services newly installed at airport gates, which cost around EGP 60 million.
