Egypt's Minister of Tourism Yehia Rashed said in an interview with the Russian Ria Novosti news agency that Egypt has not made a final decision regarding whether it will increase fees for entry visas.
Last month, an official source in Cairo airport told Ahram Online that the foreign ministry informed airport security officials that the cost of entry visas would be increased from $25 to $60 starting 1 March.
Days later, the foreign ministry informed its envoys abroad of a cabinet order to postpone the price increase until July.
Officials have not announced a reason for the delay, though sources in the tourism sector told Al-Ahram Arabic news website that the decision to postpone came after the foreign ministry received complaints from the tourism industry that the hike would negatively impact the sector.
Egypt last increased its visa fee in April 2014 from $15 to $25.
The country has struggled to attract tourists pushed away by the political turmoil that followed the 2011 uprising.
Tourism sector revenues dropped to $3.4 billion in 2016, a 44.3 percent decline from the previous year, the Central Bank of Egypt said in January. The figure is a far cry from the $11 billion in revenues generated by the sector in 2010, when 14.7 million tourists visited the country.
Egypt's cabinet decided on Tuesday to raise the price of multiple entry tourist visas from $35 to $60, while maintaining the old rate of $25 for single entry visas.
Tourism minister Yehia Rashed said in press statements that the cabinet approved the decision following a meeting headed by Prime Minister Sherif Ismail.
The minister did not specify when the change would be implemented.
In February, Egyptian officials said the country would introduce new visa hikes for both single and multiple entry visas, from $25 to $60 and $35 to $70, respectively.
Shortly after, however, the cabinet decided to postpone the implementation of the new prices from March till July, without giving a reason for the delay.
However, sources in the tourism sector have said that the price measure was postponed after Egypt's foreign ministry received complaints from the tourism sector saying the fee hike was too sudden and would negatively impact the tourism industry.
Egypt last increased its visa fee in April 2014, from $15 to $25.
Egypt has struggled to attract tourists scared off by the political turmoil that followed the 2011 uprising that ousted president Hosni Mubarak.
Tourism took another hit in 2015 after a Russian airliner crashed in Sinai, leading to the suspension of flights from several European countries, including Russia and the UK.
The country’s tourism revenues dropped to $3.4 billion in 2016 – a 44.3 percent decline from the previous year – the Central Bank of Egypt said in January.
The figure is a far cry from the $11 billion in revenues generated by the sector in 2010, when 14.7 million tourists visited the country.
Transport Minister Hesham Arafat issued a decision doubling the metro ticket price to LE2 starting Friday.

The new visa will be available for tourists from countries whose citizens require a pre-approved visa to travel to Egypt
Dalia Farouq , Thursday 27 Apr 2017
Egypt will introduce new electronic visas for tourists as of June in an attempt to attract more visitors and boost tourism in the country, according to the tourism ministry.
The new visa will be available for tourists from countries whose citizens require a pre-approved visa to travel to Egypt.
However, tourists whose citizenship allows them to obtain visas on arrival at Egyptian airports will not need to apply for the online electronic visa.
During a press conference on the sidelines of the Arabian Travel Market Exhibition – held in Dubai from 24 to 27 April – Egyptian tourism minister Yehia Rashed said there are promotional travel campaigns for Egypt that are expected to be launched soon in several countries, including European countries such as Italy.
Rashed said that the Egyptian Tourism Authority will also prepare campaign to target new markets, such as the Indian market.
"The upcoming visit by Roman Catholic Pope Francis to Egypt on Friday is a reassuring message to the world that Egypt is restoring its prominent place on the tourism map," he added.
The number of tourists visiting Egypt during the first quarter of 2017 rose by 51 percent compared to the same period last year, an official source at the tourism ministry told Ahram Online earlier this week.

Unidentified gunmen attacked an Egyptian police convoy near the main ring road around Cairo, killing three officers and wounding five others, the interior ministry said early on Tuesday.
“Armed elements riding in two vehicles approached a moving security convoy” around 11:45 pm Monday, the ministry said in a statement.
The convoy was crossing a roundabout that intersects with the main ring road that surrounds the capital, separating New Cairo and newer real estate projects from the city.
Police returned fire at the attackers’ vehicles, which police were pursuing “in an effort to apprehend the perpetrators,” the ministry said.
While no one claimed responsibility for the attack, Egypt has been fighting an insurgency by a local affiliate of the Islamic State group in North Sinai province.
Hundreds of soldiers and policemen have been killed in the insurgency since the army overthrew Islamist president Mohamed Morsi in 2013.
Following deadly church bombings last month, President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi declared a three-month state of emergency on April 10.
ISIS said it was behind the church bombings in Tanta and Alexandria on April 9 that killed 45 people.
The military has killed several of the group’s top leaders, but the extremists have increasingly expanded their attacks from Sinai to other parts of Egypt, including Cairo.

Egypt has blocked 21 websites, including Qatari-based news network Al-Jazeera, for content it said shows support for “terrorism, extremism,” state news agecny MENA reported late Wednesday.
In statements to the agency, a senior security source said the websites were blocked for their intention to spread lies.
The source only named seven of the 21 websites, including Al-Jazeera, Al-Sharq TV Channel Website, Misr El-Arabia, El-Shaab, Arabi 21, Rasd, and Hamas Online, adding that legal action would be taken against these sites.
Cairo accused several of the websites, including Al-Jazeera, of having ties with the now-banned Muslim Brotherhood group, and linked others to being funded by Qatar.
Egypt has long accused Al-Jazeera of carrying out a hostile media campaign against the country since relations between Cairo and Doha soured following the ousting in 2013 of Egypt’s Islamist president Mohamed Morsi, a key ally of the Gulf country.
Other websites that have banned in Egypt include independent news site Mada Masr, which was launched in 2013 by a group of journalists formerly of Al Masry Al Youm’s Egypt Independent, as well as Huffington Post Arabic.
The websites, however, were not explicitly named by the authorities.
Wednesday’s move comes one day after authorities in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) blocked the main website of Qatar's al Jazeera TV, which Riyadh and Abu Dhabi.
From November, foreign visitors to Egypt can buy a ‘Cairo Pass’ which will allow them unlimited entry to archaeological sites and Islamic museums in Greater Cairo over a five-day period, Egypt’s Supreme Council of Antiquities said earlier this week.
The ‘Cairo Pass’ is $100 for foreign visitors and $50 for students; this can be paid in other foreign currencies, such as the British pound or Euro. Tourists need to provide an ID photo and a photocopy of their passport. Students must provide their university ID.
The permits can be obtained from the headquarters of the Department of Cultural Relations at the Ministry of Antiquities in Zamalek, the Salah el-Din Citadel of Cairo, the Egyptian Museum or the Giza Pyramids.
“Foreign tourism companies requested this permit to be implemented in Cairo and Giza after its success in Luxor last year,” an official at the Ministry of Antiquities told Al-Borsa newspaper.
The goal of the ‘Cairo Pass’ is to improve the Ministry’s financial resources and increase foreign currency inflows into the country, the official added.
According to the Supreme Council of Antiquities, the total price of all tickets for foreign visitors at every archaeological site in Cairo and Giza—at LE8 to the dollar—is $147 (LE2,630) and $73 (LE1,315) for students. Therefore, tourists will save money by buying this pass.
Egypt’s tourism industry, a crucial source of hard currency, has suffered in the years of turmoil that followed the mass protests, as well as from the suspected bombing of a Russian plane in Sinai in 2015, which killed all 224 people on board.
Leading member of Hasm militant group killed in shootout with Egyptian police: Ministry h

Ahram Online , Ahram Online , Tuesday 11 Jul 2017
Egypt’s Ministry of Interior said on Tuesday that police killed a leading member of the militant group Hasm during a shootout in Fayoum governorate.
The ministry said that the National Security Agency received information that a meeting of the group’s members was set to be held in Fayoum’s Snores village to plan terrorist attacks.
The slain leader was responsible for recruiting young members and sending them to training camps affiliated with the group, the ministry added.
Hasm has claimed responsibility for a number of attacks against Egyptian security personnel in recent months, mostly targeting police checkpoints.
Egyptian security forces have arrested and killed dozens of suspected Hasm members in the past few months.
On Sunday, security forces in Giza said that two members of Hasm were killed in a shootout in 6 October City, a suburb of Greater Cairo.
According to interior ministry officials, the group is linked to the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood organisation.

New "high-quality" buses similar to those seen on the streets of Europe have been put into service in Cairo in a bid to offer a possible alternative for private car owners to help ease increasing congestion in the traffic-choked capital, a transport official said.
Ten air-conditioned mini buses were put into service last week and 30 more will be operational on 1 August, the head of Egypt's General Transport Authority Rizk Ali told Ahram Online on Wednesday.
The 40 vehicles, which are part of private and state projects to provide hundreds of these buses in the next few years, will run across four lines serving areas including Shubra, Cairo International Airport, downtown's Ramses, Heliopolis and Obour City.
Egypt’s public buses are notorious for being poorly maintained and overcrowded, and are rarely used by well-off Egyptians. This has resulted in an increasing number of private cars on the streets, which causes congestion throughout the day in a capital of some 22.8 million people.
There are 2.3 million licensed private cars in Cairo, according to data released last month by state-run statistics body CAPMAS.
The new buses are fitted with a number of high-tech features including free Wi-Fi, USB sockets for passengers to charge their phones, CCTV cameras and digital displays showing upcoming stops, and entertainment screens.
More importantly, the buses will offer the use of pre-paid smart cards.
Tickets for the new 26-seater buses cost EGP 5, as opposed to the EGP 1 and EGP 2 tickets for regular public buses.
The Transport Authority will merely oversee operation of the vehicles, which are owned by the Egyptian Advanced Company for Public Transportation; 70 percent of which is owned by Emirates National Group.
The new buses are part of the company's EGP 1 billion plan to bring a total of 180 buses and mini buses into operation along 18 lines across Cairo in its first phase, the company said in a statement reported by local media on Wednesday.
The vehicles will be put into service gradually till June 2018, but Ali believes the plan could take longer, given a delay in running the first batch of 10 buses.
"We will supervise everything about the service, the Wi-Fi connection, the air-conditioning, etc. It would not be acceptable for passengers to pay EGP 5 and after one month find all these functions out of service," Ali told Ahram Online.
The authority plans to impose a strict system of regular maintenance on the vehicles, where a bus with a non-functioning feature will be suspended, Ali added.
In addition to the 180 privately owned buses, Ali said the authority plans to bring into operation over 160 more European-style buses with the same features.
These include 13 double-deckers that will go into operation in Cairo before the end of the year and 150 mini buses to be brought into service gradually over the first half of 2018.
The authority is also considering financial offers for its plan to run 300 natural gas vehicles in the capital.
"We aim to offer services that will eventually reduce energy consumption, air pollution, congestion and the impact on global warming."
Last month, the government hiked fuel prices by up to 50 percent, a sharp rise and further obstacle for many Egyptians struggling with soaring living costs.
One citizen was killed and 19 injured on Sunday in clashes between security forces and residents of Al-Warraq Island in Greater Cairo, according to health ministry figures reported by state-run MENA agency.
Thirty-one police personnel were also injured in the events according to an interior ministry statement, which described their actions on the island in Giza governorate as part of a campaign to remove illegal structures and encroachments on state property on the banks of the Nile.
The interior ministry said some of the residents gathered and attacked the police with stones and birdshot rounds, prompting forces to use tear gas to disperse them.
“Clashes with those gathered resulted in the injury of eight officers, 11 police personnel, and 12 conscripts with wounds resulting from birdshot rounds,” the statement said, adding that the police were able to control the situation.
The health ministry said the injuries of the 19 civilians involved include cases of asphyxiation and birdshot wounds. They are all in a stable condition.
Police arrested 10 people, who are currently being questioned for attacking the security forces, MENA quoted a second statement by the interior ministry as saying.
Reports of clashes emerged earlier on Sunday after both military and police forces cordoned off the bridges leading to the island on both sides.
According to media reports, some residents believe the campaign to demolish illegal buildings on the banks of the Nile is part of a plan to clear the whole island.
In a statement issued on Sunday evening, Prime Minister Sherif Ismail said that it was necessary for the state to reclaim its land, and that the campaign aimed at “restoring the people’s rights.”
Ismail also said that over 700 judicial decrees have been issued ordering illegal properties on Greater Cairo’s Warraq Island be removed, and that property owners can still legalise their illegally-build properties. He also said that no agricultural land will be evacuated or destroyed.
Giza Governor Mohamed El-Dali affirmed in statements to MENA news agency that the security campaign had targeted illegal constructions and violations on the island’s Nile banks.
“Although the campaign did not target any agricultural lands or inhabited buildings, residents began an assault on security forces, and so the governorate has decided to postpone its campaign”, the official announced.
Similar clashes between security forces and residents of the island took place last year when Egyptian authorities evacuated buildings on the island to construct the Rod Al-Farag axis road, either compensating residents by transferring them to different housing units or with financial compensation.
A nationwide campaign on Nile-side encroachments was launched in 2014.
Earlier this year the irrigation and water resources ministry announced that a total of 26,322 violations along the river’s banks had been removed.
The Egyptian parliament is set to vote on a draft law that would re-classify building encroachments on the Nile as a felony, and would mandate prison sentences for offenders.
President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi said that projected time frame for establishing the electric train between Salam City and the New Administrative Capital should be reduced to be completed within two years only.
He said that the project will provide a safe and modern means of transportation for commuters between Greater Cairo, and the New Administrative Capital, as well as facilitate the transport of goods and production materials to and from the cities and industrial areas located along the railway line.
Sisi said that the contract with the company establishing the project should be on the best terms that include regular maintenance of trains and training for project personnel, to ensure maintenance the level of service it would provide.
Sisi’s remarks came during a meeting with representatives of the Chinese companies’ alliance, which will establish the electric train project. Transport Minister Hisham Arafat was in attendance at the meeting.
The spokesman for the presidency, Alaa Yousuf, said that the meeting discussed the latest developments in the train contract negotiations, which comes within the framework of the plan implemented by Transport Ministry to develop the railway network across Egypt and improve the services it provides.
Yousuf added that the representatives of the Chinese companies alliance reviewed, during the meeting, the various stages of the project, which is expected to extend about 66 kilometers and includes 11 stops.
Chinese companies’ officials stressed their keenness for Egyptian construction companies to work with them in the civil work and installation of rails, which will provide thousands of jobs.
The Transport Minister explained that the project will contribute to enhancing the efforts of urban development along the course of the train, as well as the reduction of traffic congestion in addition to energy conservation and eco-friendliness.
Arafat pointed out that the electric train will connect with the third line of the subway in Salam City, linking the cities of Greater Cairo, Obour, Shorouk, Badr, and the New Administrative Capital through the 10th of Ramadan City.
Former Transport Minister, Hani Dahy, said in a 2015 statement that the project will be funded by the Chinese government and the Export-Import Bank of China.
Shark attacks are of rare occurrence in Egypt, but experts say feeding sharks and sport fishing may provoke attacks
Ahram Online , Monday 7 Aug 2017
An Austrian tourist has flown home for further medical treatment after suffering a leg injury in a shark attack in the Red Sea resort of Marsa Alam, Al-Ahram Arabic website reported on Monday.
Christine Schachinger, 20, was bitten by a shark while taking part in water sports in the Red Sea. She was rushed to a private hospital in Marsa Alam and received treatment on her right leg.
She was later transferred to Austria by private jet for further medical treatment.
Shark attacks are very rare in Egypt, with only 34 cases reported since 1827, according to the Shark Research Institute, a US-based scientific research organization.
However, environmentalists say certain actions on the part of divers and swimmers may provoke attacks.
The Society for the Rescue and Protection of the Environment of the Red Sea warns diving guides and tourists against feeding sharks or otherwise provoking them.
The organization says the Austrian tourist was probably attacked in response to such actions.
Last year, Egypt imposed a temporary ban on sport fishing and offshore swimming at Ain Sokhna on the Red Sea after a man was bitten by a shark.
At the time, officials and scientists said the attack was likely caused by a combination of fishing and swimming in the same spot.
In 2010, three shark attacks in the span of one week have left four eastern European tourists seriously injured and one German tourist dead.
Blocked media includes independent news website Mada Masr, the privately-owned Daily News Egypt, Qatar-owned news agencies Al-Jazeera, El-Sharq, Al-Raya and El-Watan, in addition to the US-based HuffPost Arabic.
There has been no official announcement or clarification from any telecommunications entities regarding the reason.
Seven alleged terrorists have been killed in an exchange of gunfire with police in central Cairo's Agouza district, an interior ministry official told state-run news agency MENA on Sunday.
The incident occurred when police attempted to raid an apartment they believed to be a terrorist hideout, with the suspects opening fire on police first, the official said.
Two policemen were also injured during the raid.
The gunmen were planning to carry out a number of terrorist attacks, according to the official, prompting police to conduct the raid.
Egypt's military and security forces have been battling various Islamist militant groups in Sinai and elsewhere, with some groups in Cairo and Giza conducting deadly attacks on security personnel.
Police frequently conduct raids on suspected terrorist hideouts, often resulting in deadly gun battles.

Egypt public sector workers to take Thursday off to celebrate 6 October
Ahram Online , Sunday 1 Oct 2017
Egyptian Prime Minister Sherif Ismail announced that 5 October will be an official day off for public sector workers, Al-Ahram Arabic news website reported on Sunday.
Thursday will be a day off since 6 October falls on Friday, an official weekly day off from work in Egypt.
6 October is a national holiday to celebrate the Egyptian army’s victory over Israel in the 1973 war.
Egypt's security forces killed 13 high-risk terrorist elements on Friday during a raid on an abandoned ranch building located at the 47km mark on the Assiut-Al-Kharga Oasis highway, the interior ministry said in a statement.
The operation “resulted in the seizure of a large amount of arms and ammunition, including detonative charges and explosive belts, that were in the possession of the terrorist elements, who started opening fire at security forces upon their arrival at the shootout site," the statement said.
The approximate location of the raid is around 234 km south of Cairo.
“Security forces are currently working on identifying the slain terrorist elements, while the shootout resulted in some damages to a security vehicle.”
The operation comes as part of the ministry's effort to eradicate terrorist hideouts in remote areas of Giza and of Upper Egypt governorates, said the statement.
Last Friday, 16 policemen were killed and 13 were injured in a shootout with terrorists on the Wahat highway, about 135km southwest of Giza.
The interior ministry said that 11 police officers, four conscripts and one sergeant were killed in the shootout, and a search is underway for one missing police officer. Four police officers and nine conscripts were also injured.

Egypt's President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi inaugurated on Sunday in Cairo the annual Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Conference, where Egypt’s new e-Visa service was launched.
The online e-Visa system will serve visitors looking to travel to Egypt from any of 43 countries, including the United States, Canada, the UK, France and Cyprus.
The eVisa is an electronic travel authorisation that is stored electronically and is linked to a passport number. Applications for the e-Visa are done online.
El-Sisi also inaugurated through video conference the new technological zones in Beni Suef, Menoufiya and Assiut governorates.
During the inauguration, telecommunication and information technology minister Yasser El-Kady presented to President El-Sisi the first Egyptian-made mobile phone as a gift.
Manufactured in the technological zone in New Assuit City, the Sico Smartphone is the first mobile phone to be manufactured in Egypt, with 58 percent of its components manufactured locally, according to Minister El-Kady.
The Android Smartphone is manufactured by Sico Technology, which is a subsidiary of El-Siyad Salem Group.
The company is set to launch eight models of the Smartphone locally as well as in African and Arab markets.
The ICT conference, which has been held annually for the past 20 years, is Egypt's largest conference for information technology.
According to its organisers, at least 500 Arab and international companies in the IT field have participated in the conference, attracting millions of visitors throughout the years.

Cairo appeals court acquitted on Tuesday famous Egyptian pop-singer Sherine Abdel-Wahab of charges of "offending Egypt" over statements she made in August 2016 about the existence of the Bilharzia parasite in the Nile River.
Sherine was originally senteneced in absentia to six months in prison in February 2018.
In August 2016, a fan asked the 37-year-old Sherine during a concert in Lebanon to perform her popular 2007 song Mashrebtesh Men Nilha? (Have You Not Drunk from Its Nile?), a patriotic song that extols Egypt's beauty.
The singer jokingly replied, “You will get Bilharzia if you do," adding, "drink Evian instead."
A video of the incident surfaced online and went viral on social media networks in Egypt, sparking controversy and anger from some fans.
The Bilharzia disease is caused by water-borne parasites living in ponds and closed streams in several of Egypt's governorates.

Cairo International Airport increased parking fees on Monday by 100 percent.
The Cairo Port Authority, which manages the entrance gates at Cairo airport's parking lots, said that different rates will be applied according to the category of vehicles.
Parking fees for taxis and privately owned cars have been set at EGP 20 for the first three hours and EGP 10 for each subsequent hour. Parking fees for a full day have been set at EGP 100.
For microbuses and pickup trucks, fees have been set at EGP 30 for the first three hours and EGP 15 for each subsequent hour, while buses and transport vehicles will be charged EGP 30 for the first three hours and EGP 20 for each subsequent hour.
Trucks and the semi-trailers will pay EGP 60 the first three hours and EGP 30 for each subsequent hour.
The increase does not apply to airport employees and workers with affiliated companies, the port authority said.
In 2016, parking fees at Cairo airport witnessed their first increase in nine years from EGP 5 to 10.
The port authority said that the new increase is due to renovations, maintenance and services newly installed at airport gates, which cost around EGP 60 million.

CAIRO (Reuters) - An explosion destroyed a car near a bridge in central Cairo on Monday after a collision, a health ministry spokesman said.
It was not immediately clear what caused the blast. Two security sources told Reuters a faulty battery may have been responsible.
Ministry spokesman Khaled Megahed told journalists three people were injured and transferred to hospital. Another health ministry official told a local radio station that several others were treated for minor injuries.
The security sources said flames from the car spread to a minibus, which Reuters witnesses said was also destroyed, with debris and metal scattered close by.
A civil defense officer told Reuters at the site that at least five people were hurt.
Nine people were injured by a microbus colliding with a private car at el-Batal Ahmed Abdel Aziz Street in Dokki, Giza on Monday, according to Egypt’s Health Ministry.
A statement by the ministry said that both vehicles caught fire before October Bridge.
12 ambulances have rushed to the scene, transferring the injured to the Agouza, al-Salam, and Qasr al-Aini Hospitals, according to ministry spokseman Khaled Megahid.
Megahid stated that all victims are receiving treatment and care, adding that the injuries ranged from minor to medium wounds and burns.
Authorities didn’t report any casualties as a result of the fire, while civil defence forces brought the fire under control
Ahram Online , Wednesday 8 Aug 2018
Egypt's public prosecution has mandated a forensic team to inspect Cairo's Downtown Rivoli Cinema, which erupted in fire early Wednesday, with the main theatre hall and upper storey of the building destroyed.
Authorities didn’t report any casualties as a result of the fire, while civil defence forces brought the fire under control.
Cairo's governor ordered a committee of engineers to find the cause of the fire and prepare a report on losses and damages.
Downtown Cairo's Rivoli Cinema is one of the oldest in the country, among 10 first opened in 1948.
It was also one of the largest theatres in the country with a capacity of more than 2,000 viewers and a landmark location in the capital.

An Egyptian explosives expert has been killed while he was attempting to defuse a bomb near a church in Cairo, Al Arabiya’s correspondent reports.
“There were suspicions of an unattended package near the church in Nasr city after which a bomb squad was immediately deployed and attempts were made to diffuse it,” Al Arabiya News Channel’s correspondent Ahmed Othman said.
“The church in question is located in Nasr city and is one of the smaller ones in the areas and the capital,” he added.
Two policemen and an onlooker were also injured when the device exploded, security sources said.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the incident.
The incident took place 24 hours before Egypt marks Coptic Orthodox Christmas on Monday. Coptic Orthodox Christians, who make up a substantial majority of all Christians in the country, celebrate Christmas on 7 January, following the Julian calendar.
