The blast took place near a foreign ministry building in Agouza, Cairo
Ahram Online , Sunday 20 Sep 2015
Two policemen were injured on Sunday after a bomb exploded near a foreign ministry building in the Giza district of Agouza.
The target was Central Security Forces there, Al-Ahram Arabic news website reported. The blast in Ahmed Orabi Street broke nearby car windows.
Civil defence forces and bomb disposal experts arrived at the scene to comb the area for more bombs, a security source said.
The Agouza prosecution also arrived at the scene to investigate the blast and the amount of explosives used.
Individual visits to Cairo Tower banned for fear of suicide | Egypt Independent

"If you are visiting the Cairo Tower alone, you will be denied entry" is a new policy at Cairo Tower following a university student's suicide in June, reported Al-Masry Al-Youm.
Al-Masry Al-Youm has received complaints since June stating that Cairo Tower employees are denying entry over fear that single entries will commit suicide.
Al-Masry Al-Youm photojournalist Islam Farouk attempted to verify the complaints by visiting the tower alone.
Farouk was denied entry by the tower's security guards despite stressing that he traveled from Sharqiya to Cairo particularly to spend a day at Cairo Tower.
After a quarrel with the guards, they allowed him to enter the tower and to stay for only 15 minutes, stressing that banning individual visits was for fear of suicide attempts. Two guards followed Farouk during his visit, saying it was for his safety.
Farouk was forced to leave the tower after 15 minutes despite paying the full ticket price.
Farouk asked to meet with tower officials, and security led him to Colonel Yousry Gerges. Gerges confirmed that the decision to ban visitors coming to the tower alone was agreed upon verbally between tower employees and was not made official or public.
Gerges added that the policy also applies to foreign visitors, not just Egyptians.
A bomb detonated late Wednesday near Cairo's Azbakeya police station leaving two citizens injured, MENA reported.
Media spokesperson for the interior ministry announced late on Wednesday that a blast occurred near the Azbakeya police station in central Cairo.
Civil defence forces and bomb disposal experts arrived at the scene to comb the area for more bombs, a security source told MENA.
The blast damaged police vehicles that were parked outside the station, but no injuries were initially reported.
However, the health ministry later announced that two citizens were reported injured from the blast and were transported to El-Helal general hospital.
No group has yet claimed responsibility for the bombing.
Cairo governor Galal Saied visited the site of the blast early Thursday, asking forces to tighten security in the area as it is surrounded by residential buildings and schools.
In a similar incident that took place late September, two policemen were injured outside a foreign ministry building in the Giza district of Agouza.
Egypt's parliamentary elections produce 21.7% turnout in first round run-offs ht

The Free Egyptians Party, founded by billionaire businessman Naguib Sawiris, has clinched the biggest quota in the elections, announcing it has won 41 seats
Ahram Online , Friday 30 Oct 2015
The first round run-offs of Egypt's two-stage parliamentary elections produced a 21.7% turnout, the country's High Elections Committee (HEC) said on Friday.
The HEC head Ayman Abbas told a news conference that 5.554678 million out of 25.582518 million voters had cast their ballot in the run-offs, which took place on Tuesday and Wednesday. Among those voters were 19,835-foreign based Egyptians in 139 countries.
The turnout in the run-off was less than the 26.69 percent who voted in the first round earlier this month.
"The turnout of these elections was not the lowest in Egypt's parliamentary elections history. This year's turnout in total was 26.69 percent while turnout in the parliamentary elections in 2005 was 23 percent. The turnout in the Shura council (Upper House) elections in 2012 was 12 percent," he said.
"The highest turnout among the 14 governorates in this round was Matrouh (near the Libyan borders) with a turnout of 33.45 percent; while the lowest was Alexandria with a turnout of 14.83 percent."
The total number of appeals given before the committee were 367. Abbas said that they were all rejected except for three that the committee is still studying.
The second and final stage of the elections in the remaining governorates will take place on 21 and 22 November, with run-offs, if necessary, due on 1 and 2 December.
Abbas also said that a total of 273 candidates have secured their seats in the country's upcoming parliament. He broke the number of the candidates saying that 213 independent candidates won in the first round of the elections.
He then said that among the 213 independent candidates there are 108 who are party-affiliated. All 60 seats for the lists in this round went to the "For the Love of Egypt" list that is being coordinated by former intelligence member Sameh Seif El-Yazal.
The Free Egyptians Party, founded by billionaire businessman Naguib Sawiris following the popular 2011 revolt, has clinched the biggest quota, announcing it has won 41 seats.
Out of the individual candidates who won in the elections' first stage, five were women and 10 were less than 35 years old, Abbas said.

Egyptian authorities announced it would allow Chinese tourist groups to obtain visas upon arrival at the airport, provided that the Chinese tourists come with a travel agency and have a sufficient amount of money, said Tourism Minister Hisham Zaazou in a statement Sunday.
Chinese tourists previously had to obtain visas at an Egyptian embassy or consualte prior to arrival.
Coordination between the Tourism Ministry and other state authorities will continue to facilitate visa procedures for tourists to ensure the process is boosting tourism, Zaazou added.
Zaazou praised security authorities for understanding the demands of the tourism sector, pointing out that there are regular meetings being held by the ministry with the concerned parties to study the sector's requests regarding visa procedures.

The system was scrapped following a public poll that showed a majority did not support applying daylight savings time in Egypt.
First implemented in the country in 1988, the system was introduced as a power-saving measure prolonging daylight hours.
It was abolished in April 2011 after the uprising that toppled autocrat Hosni Mubarak, with the government arguing at the time that the practice was ineffective at curbing power usage.
The system was temporarily revived in May 2014 in order to ease consumption after the country saw rolling power blackouts.
In the summer of that year, Egypt changed the clock four times, first applying daylight savings time, and then suspending it during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan to shorten the daily dawn-to-dusk fast.
Egypt is normally two hours ahead of Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) and Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) — meaning it was three hours ahead when daylight saving time was applied.
The Egyptian cabinet announced on Thursday that daylight savings time will return to Egypt starting 7 July until the end of October.
Daylight savings time, which had for years seen clocks put forward one hour in the summer, was canceled last April in a decision by Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi.

BBC Weather reported that Cairo’s temperature reached 47 degrees Celsius on Sunday
Ahram Online , Monday 16 May 2016
Egypt's soaring heat wave is set to break and will drop 10 degrees Celsius on Tuesday to 34, Egypt's meteorological authority said on Monday.
The authority’s spokesperson, Waheed Seoudi, said in a TV interview on Monday that the weather is set to improve with a Tuesday temperature of 34 degrees Celsius, referring to it as the "normal" temperature at this time of the year. The low in the capital would be 23 degrees.
The coastal city of Alexandria will see largely cooler weather, with a high of 26 degrees and a low of 20 degrees.
Temperatures in Hurghada and Sharm El-Sheikh, two of the most popular Red Sea beach resorts, will record highs of 43 and 40 respectively and lows of 24-28 C.
Tuesday's weather will result in moderate conditions for navigation in the Mediterranean and the Red Sea with an average wave height respectively of 2-2.5m-1.5-2 m.
Egypt has been hit with a four day heat wave that started on Saturday, with temperatures hitting highs of 43 degrees in Cairo and 40 degrees on the north coast.
BBC Weather reported that Sunday’s weather reached a striking 47 Celsius, only one degree below the highest temperature ever recorded in the capital.
On Sunday, Egypt's metro authority said greater Cairo’s metro system lowered its speeds in a move that aimed to avoid added friction on the tracks that could cause derailment.
The Meteorological Authority has repeatedly advised citizens to stay out of direct sunlight for long periods of time between noon and evening and to stay hydrated.
A shark attacked an Egyptian man swimming "six kilometers offshore" in the Red Sea city of Ain Sokhna on Saturday, Suez governor Ahmed Helmi El-Hiatmi said.
The 23-year-old victim was transferred to Suez public hospital and had his leg amputated, state news agency MENA said. He is currently receiving treatment in the intensive care unit of the hospital.
"Sharks live in the Red Sea and it's normal to see them there, but the victim was swimming 6km from the beach, which makes it possible to encounter a shark," El-Hiatmi told Ahram Online.
"What may raise concerns, if we found a shark within 500 meters from the beach, where most of the locals and tourists swim," El-Haiatmi said, adding that he commissioned an environmental committee to investigate the incident.
Shark attacks in the Red Sea resort are exceedingly rare; the last recorded sighting of sharks in Ain Sokhna occurred in 2012 when eyewitnesses saw three sharks in the area. No casualties were reported at the time.
Ain Sokhna is a popular resort town lying on the western shore of the Red Sea's Gulf of Suez, about 120 kilometres east of Cairo.
Last year, a shark killed a 52-year-old German tourist in the Red Sea governorate in the first fatal shark attack in Egypt since a string of maulings in 2010 that killed a German woman and wounded three Russian tourists in another Red Sea resort near Sharm El-Sheikh.
Following the 2010 incident, local diving experts said single shark attacks were very rare in the area and were puzzled as to why so many people were attacked in such quick succession.
An Egyptian cabinet decision issued on Sunday has made Thursday a public holiday to commemorate the 30 June mass protests which led to the ouster of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi in 2013, with all museums to admit locals and foreigners free of charge for the day.
The decision, made by Egypt Prime Minister Sherif Ismail, stipulates that Thursday 30 June will be a paid day off for many governmental employees, Egypt's state news agency MENA reported.
However, the day off is not applicable for schools and universities, where students are currently taking exams.
On 30 June 2013, millions of citizens hit the streets to protest the rule of Morsi, who was elected one year earlier. Morsi was removed from office on 3 July before facing trial on various charges and has been incarcerated ever since.

Egypt's population has risen by 17.3 million since 2006; a 23.7 percent increase
Ahram Online , Wednesday 23 Nov 2016
Egypt’s population will reach 92 million on Thursday, rising by one million over the last six months and making the total number of Egyptians worldwide 100 million, the Central Agency for Public Mobilisation and Statistics (CAPMAS) announced in a statement on Wednesday.
From 2006 to 2016, Egypt's population rose by 17.3 million, according to CAPMAS.
"The ongoing population growth rates significantly limit the efforts to achieve tangible progress in living standards," the statement read.
Prime Minister Sherif Ismail warned in July of the current rate of population increase, saying it hinders the country's development plans.
In 2015, CAPMAS said that the current population growth rate of 2.4 percent represents one of the most important and dangerous challenges that Egyptian society faces, adding that the rate was five times that of developed countries and double the average for developing countries.
At least 25 people were reported killed and 31 injured after an explosion near the Coptic Cathedral in Cairo's Abbassyia district early Sunday morning, Minister of Health Ahmed Emad told CBC Extra satellite channel.
The Coptic Church's official spokesperson Rev Paul Halim told Al-Ahram Arabic that the explosion took place in the small church of St Peter and St Paul (El-Botroseya), attached to the Coptic Cathedral.
Security forces are screening the area and have blocked the main roads surrounding the cathedral.
The injured have been transferred to Dar El-Shefaa and Ain Shams University Hospital.
A security source told the Middle East News Agency (MENA) that the explosion was caused by a 12 kilogramme TNT bomb.
Member of the Coptic Papal residence Samuel Metias told MENA that the explosion occurred in the ladies section of the St Peter and St Paul church. The St Mark Cathedral was left undamaged.
This is the third explosion this week. On Friday, an explosion killed six policemen and injured three others in Giza's Haram district and another occurred in Kafr El-Sheikh international road, killing one civilian and injuring three policemen.
There have been several minor attacks on churches following the dispersal of the Rabaa Al-Adawyia sit-in protesting the overthrow of Islamist former president Mohamed Morsi, who hails from the Muslim Brotherhood.
The worst attack against Copts in Egypt was in 2011 when 23 people were killed in an explosion at the Two Saints Church in Alexandria.

The new tariff would have the metres start at 4 EGP instead of the previous 3 EGP, and the per kilometre price will be set at 1.75 EGP instead of 1.40 EGP, which is an increase of 35 piasters per kilometre. The waiting rate will also increase by 14 piasters to stand at 39 piasters per minute (14 EGP per hour.)
The new tariff is currently being gradually activated among taxis, where some have already started operating by it.

:Egypt increases fees for tourists entry visas: Airport official
h
ttp://english.ahram.org.eg/News/258816.aspx
Egypt is increasing fees for entry visas from $25 to $60 for incoming tourists starting 1 March, an airport official told Ahram Online on Friday.
The foreign ministry informed airport security officials about the fee increase earlier this week, the source added.
Egypt last pushed up the fee for its visa in April 2014, when it was increased from $15 to $25.
Several tour operators have said that the decision would cause problems for tourists who booked trips based on the old rate.
Some in the tourism sector say the decision should have been announced several months beforehand, expressing fears that the move might affect the country's efforts to revive tourism, a pillar of the economy and a key source of foreign currency.
Egypt has struggled to attract tourists pushed away by the political turmoil that followed the 2011 uprising.
The country’s revenues from tourism dropped to $3.4 billion in 2016, a 44.3 percent drop from the previous year, the Central Bank of Egypt said in January. The figure is a far cry from the $11 billion in revenues generated by the sector in 2010, when 14.7 million tourists visited the country.
Egypt is postponing a fee hike in tourist entry visas - a decision announced last week - until July, the country’s tourism ministry said on Saturday.
In statements to state news agency MENA, the ministry said the new fee -- which will increase from $25 to $60 -- will be implemented starting 1 July 2017, instead of a planned 1 March date.
The ministry did not provide a reason for the delay, however, sources in the tourism sector told Al-Ahram Arabic news website that the decision to postpone came after the foreign ministry stepped in to deal with complaints from the tourism sector to the cabinet saying the fee hike was too abrupt.
Representatives from the sector reached out to the cabinet last week to ask it to adjust the timeline for the fee hike, in order to maintain agreements with foreign travel operators based on the old rates.
