DeHaven said. He cited the experience of Canadian investigators, who unsuccessfully tried to identify the birth herd of a cow found infected with mad cow disease in May, adding that "it could also be a matter of weeks or months. It's also possible that we may not be able to determine it at all."

And according to Dr. Ron DeHaven, the USDA chief veterinarian, the U.S. system was never intended to keep sick animals from reaching the public's refrigerators. It is "a surveillance system, not a food safety test," he said.

federal investigators「 tentatively concluded」 Saturday.
Federal investigators are 「tentatively concluding 」that the Holstein infected with mad cow disease in Washington state came from Canada

The U.S. Agriculture Department said on Saturday it「 believes信じている」 the dairy cow infected with mad cow disease was imported to the United States from Canada in 2001.
Ron DeHaven, the USDA's chief veterinarian, told reporters the cow was「 likely可能性がある」 one of a herd of 74 imported to Idaho from Alberta, Canada, in August 2001。

1)米のダウナー牛"downer" cattle(病気やけがで歩けない牛)は年間19.5万頭。
I replied that safety issues come first,"」と農林省のナカガワヒロシ氏は報道陣に語った
One of the things we are looking at is additional testing,All of those options are on the table and they are being actively considered."
When cows with metabolic disease go down, it may be difficult to get them on their feet again - they become ‘downer cows’.
