カミオカンデとスーパーカミオカンデによって，人類は，宇宙がニュートリノによって輝いていることを知り，そして素粒子の世界に広大なフロンティアが存在することを認識した。ニュートリノは物理学の中で最もホットな研究テーマとなり，世界の主要国が日本を追うようにさまざまなニュートリノ実験を進めている。
私たちの宇宙観，物質観を革新したカミオカンデ以降の日本のニュートリノ研究。その研究を一貫してリードした物理学者が戸塚洋二（とつか・ようじ）氏だった。戸塚氏はカミオカンデが構想される10年以上前の1960年代，当時，東京大学の新進助教授だった小柴昌俊（こしば・まさとし）氏のもとの大学院生として奥飛騨山中の神岡鉱山に“潜り”，宇宙線研究に取り組んだ。そして1980年代初頭，再び奥飛騨の地に戻ってカミオカンデ建設の最前線に立ち，スーパーカミオカンデでは最高責任者となった。東京大学から高エネルギー加速器研究機構に移り，その機構長となってからは，ニュートリノ実験を含め日本の素粒子実験全体の推進役となった。その間には，だれも予想し得なかったスーパーカミオカンデの大規模破損事故が起き，小柴氏のノーベル物理学賞受賞という日本中が沸いた大ニュースもあった。大規模破損事故の際，戸塚氏は，その責任を一身に負った。研究グループは戸塚氏のもとに団結し，奇跡ともいえる復活を成し遂げた。また師のノーベル賞受賞の際，戸塚氏は「これで報われた」と大喜びしたという。
2008年はカミオカンデの稼働から四半世紀の節目の年だった。日経サイエンスは戸塚氏の多大な協力を得て2008年4月号（2月25日発売号）から9月号（7月25日発売号）にかけて，波乱に富むニュートリノ研究の歩みを振り返り，今後を展望した連載記事「カミオカンデとスーパーカミオカンデ 物理学を変えた四半世紀」を掲載した。そのとき戸塚氏は，がんとの長く厳しい闘いの中にあり，2008年7月10日，旅立たれた。ノーベル物理学賞の受賞が目前とも言われていた。戸塚氏は晩年，闘病生活を送るかたわら，離れて暮らしている家族や知人に自分の消息を伝えるため「A Few More Months」と題したブログを始めた。ブログの内容は自身の病状や，がん治療で考えたこと，科学の話，大学の話，長年暮らした奥飛騨の自然の話，死生観に関する話など非常に多彩で奥が深いものだった。
