@Egbert Thank you. I think many of the comments on here, presumably by Americans miss the point or when making their own point, obfuscate the main point. WW II and the destruction of the British Empire brought great benefits to the USA and that is why the USA was so eager for it. Over fifty million Europeans dead and much of the continent destroyed, suffering on a scale never seen in history before while not one bomb was dropped on the USA in the entire war (Hawaii was not a state in 1941) and the USA’s suffering (a few hundred thousand soldiers) was nothing compared to what many European countries experienced. In addition Europe lost it’s leadership position in the world which it held for thousands of years. It should be pretty obvious why Americans support the destruction of the British Empire. It brought great benefits to them. So did WW II. And without one, we wouldn’t have the other. WW II was necessary to destroy the empire.
