A fun white water trip if ever there was one. The water from Jordan Dam is regulated for recreational use during the summer months, providing deep water, but there’s plenty of white water, including the challenging Class III Moccasin Gap. Although intimidating to look at, most of the rapids are manageable for novice to intermediate paddlers at up to 8,000 cfs flow. The banks are lined with oaks, magnolia, dogwood, azaleas, and interesting rock formations, including dozens of islands for stopping and relaxing in the middle of the river. The town of Wetumpka is best known for the Coosa River, which is just plain and simply a fun river. For the most part the river is wide?300 feet in some areas?with rock bluffs and outcroppings. The banks are generally steep and thick in brush (and harbor a variety of snakes), but there are plenty of rock islands along the way to stop and have lunch.
