Get over the tough part of this hike first with a steep climb up to the northern ridge of Double Oak Mountain. The reward will be a long walk along a narrow scenic ridge, topped with a shoreline tour of Oak Mountain State Park’s lesser-known lake, Lake Tranquility. I hiked this trail in December on a cool, overcast day. Within the first 2 miles, I was sweating and had to stop and remove my jacket and my hat. Shortly, though, up on the windy ridge, I cooled quickly and re-donned my hat in a hurry. In summer, the sweating begins as soon as you step out of your vehicle. In either season, it’s important to stay hydrated and not overheat or chill. This is a beautiful hike that takes you through a variety of terrain. Steep ascents will have you huffing, but the long ridge walk and a long rolling downhill to Lake Tranquility will give you plenty of time to catch your breath. This hike is no cakewalk, but the strenuous elements are nicely spaced, making for an enjoyable outing.
