The Potsdam Conference (July 17 to August 2, 1945) attempted to confront the delicate balance of power of the opposing governmental structures, democracy and communism. However despite the agreement on the partitioning of Germany and the call for an unconditional surrender of Japan, the conference did nothing to quell the increasing tensions between the Western Allies and the Soviets. The destruction of Hiroshima and Nagasaki sealed the fate of Japan, and the surrender documents were signed on the USS Missouri on September 2nd, 1945. The attack on the Western Allies by the Soviets on October 2nd had been foreshadowed by Gen. Patton s bellicose remarks and a series of border incidents. Now, the US faces another World War, while still weary from the last.
