Officials then tried to confirm if Chesley Sullenberger could steer the Airbus 320 back to LaGuardia.
But he immediately replied: "We are unable. We may end up in the Hudson."
The captain told air traffic controllers he could not make any of the runways at LaGuardia and asked if there were any other airports available.
"I am not sure if we can make any runway. What's over to our right, anything in New Jersey, maybe Teterboro?" he said.
Mr Sullenberger was then asked if he wanted to land on Runway 1 at Teterboro Airport and initially replied that he did.
But when the controller confirmed he had the go-ahead for landing, the pilot responded calmly: "We can't do it. We're gonna be in the Hudson."
