- “The Dream of a Fire Engine” was very confusing and I still do not really have a good idea about what it means. At first look at the title, I imagined a young boy dreaming of becoming a firefighter and the prestige that comes with the profession. He dreams of being a hero. The first two stanzas seem ordinary and involving being a firefighter, remembering his grandfather, mother and sister and why he does his job- to protect them. The first line of the poem reminds me of red due to the color that you see when the sun is glaring and your eyes are closed; you still see red. The second line says siren so I imagine he’s talking about a fire truck from these two lines. The last three stanzas just throw me off. After I read about the line involving “Communist,” the character with chopped-off feet and then Mao, I immediately relate this red to Communist China. Somehow the author, I think, is alluding through this poem about the Communist State of China under Mao Zedong and the oppression faced under this tyrannical rule. Not too sure though with the first two stanzas or half the 3rd stanza. Judging from the author of the poem, I think it has to do with Communist Chine rather than a fire engine.

- Um … yeah … what you said. Yes, I’m laughing. A lot. As a child, I managed to learn varying amounts of Spanish, German and French. I was probably semi-fluent in Spanish, and I actually managed that from classes in high school, and a circle of friends who were determined to learn it. I’ve since forgotten most of what I learned then. And yeah, I thought I was bad at language learning too, in spite of a demonstrated knack *and* A’s in high school Spanish classes. I got that idea from the fact that those classes took effort and practice outside of class to learn the language. What I didn’t realize is that my learning was happening almost exclusively outside of class.

- Its amazing that even though Khrushchev introduced a “thaw”, where censorship was decreases, yet at the same time, he called for the reduction of the Orthodox Church, which as you said, played a huge role in Russian lives. It seems that he uncensored things that wouldn’t rival or affect his power, such as freeing Gulag prisoners, and instead, limited religion which could wield threatening power to his legitimacy if it were to see differently then him.
