congenial と、接頭辞のない genial は非常によく似た意味を持つ。辞書では、congenial を「性質が似ていて気が合う」、genial を「（一般的に）性格がいい」と定義しているが、実際は2語をほとんど区別せず、人が「親しみやすい」場合に使う。

ただし、congenial は人以外に、趣味やスタイルが「好みである」「性に合う」という場合にも使われる点が異なる。
