On the left once more and he picked out Udogie with a run and low cross and did the same for Richarlison to make it two assists in the first half. He then netted himself with a penalty late in the second half - the first Spurs have had this season - after being brought down by Dubravka. A real captain's performance and he inspired the team. 9

Made Spurs' two first-half goals with some lethal wing-play, twice beating Kieran Trippier and crossing before winning and converting the penalty for 4-0. Justified Postecoglou's decision to move him back out wide and was outstanding in transition.
LM: Son Heung-min - 9/10 - A few eyebrows were raised when Tottenham's primary scorer this season was shunted to the wing, but the club captain rolled back the years with a vintage performance from the wing.

Son has assumed and revelled in the role of being Tottenham's main man since England captain Harry Kane departed the club for Bayern Munich in the summer.
Increasing his tally to 10 for the season in the Premier League after converting a penalty and was unlucky not to add a few more with Newcastle out on their feet late on, but his body of work is about so much more than merely scoring goals.
From a roaming wide left berth, he played a pivotal role in opening up Newcastle twice in the first half with the sort of fast footwork that will give Trippier nightmares if he is forced to study a replay of how not to mark your man.

Son Heung-min (Tottenham): I said at the beginning of the season Newcastle may have a little too much on their plate. Playing Champions League football and expecting to retain a top-four position in your own domestic league is about as demanding as it gets. Kieran Trippier, who has featured so prominently this season for the Magpies, was taken apart by Son and eventually substituted.
I don't think for one second it would have happened under normal circumstances, but this is no ordinary season for Newcastle. Spurs, on the other hand, can be shockingly inconsistent but brilliant when they get it right and against Newcastle they got it spot on.
Right-back: Pedro Porro – Tottenham
A brilliant performance from Tottenham, who got back on track with a comfortable win over Newcastle in North London. Pedro Porro was an influential figure down the right flank, with the Spaniard always involved as he looked to carve out opportunities for Ange Postecoglou’s side.
Porro won four duels, made three tackles and three key passes, including a wonderful floated pass to pick out Richarlison for the third goal. It’s now five Premier League assists for the season for Porro, only Kieran Trippier (7) has more among defenders.
Winger: Son Heung-min – Tottenham
Two assists and a goal in Tottenham’s 4-0 thrashing of Newcastle, as Ange Postecoglou’s side turned on the style in North London. The Spurs skipper gave former teammate Kieran Trippier a torrid time on his return to the club, beating the England international easily to set up the opening two goals.
Son scored his 10th goal of the Premier League campaign from the penalty spot to complete an impressive afternoon’s work, with the South Korean having now scored 10+ goals in eight consecutive campaigns. Spurs have sparkled at times in attacking areas under Postecoglou and Son has provided the cutting edge.
Forward: Richarlison – Tottenham
Richarlison has not always reached the heights expected at Tottenham, but the Brazilian was in the mood as Spurs thrashed Newcastle this weekend.
The North Londoners have been a fun watch under Ange Postecoglou and Richarlison benefitted form the club’s adventurous style, scoring twice as Spurs ended a five-game winless run with an emphatic win. The 26-year-old turned home Son Heung-min’s cross to score the second goal in an eventual 4-1 win, before collecting Pedro Porro’s pass to steer in the third.

Dropping back out to the wing this week, Son Heung-min delivered another sensational performance as he bagged a goal and two assists in Tottenham's 4-1 drubbing of Newcastle United on Sunday.
Son has now made it eight straight seasons with at least ten Premier League goals, a feat only achieved by six other players - including his BFF Harry Kane.

Not since April 2022 had Richarlison scored twice in a Premier League game, while his last goal with his feet in the competition came one month later. It's been a long road to redemption for Richarlison at Tottenham, but he finally broke the curse this weekend.
The Brazilian, playing up top this time, netted twice as Spurs ran through Newcastle and brought a five-game winless run to a close.
RB Pedro Porro (Tottenham Hotspur)
Sound defensively and initiated wave after wave of Tottenham attacks as they thumped Newcastle 4-1. Saw a rasping effort well saved by Martin Dubravka.
LB Destiny Udogie (Tottenham Hotspur)
A rampaging display from the Spurs defender. At times he was the furthest player forward in a white shirt and was fitting that he opened the scoring in a 4-1 win over Newcastle United.
CM Pape Sarr (Tottenham Hotspur)
A welcome return from injury for Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou, Sarr brought energy and drive to midfield and didn't give Newcastle players a moment's peace.
CF Son Heung-min (Tottenham Hotspur)
Tormentor-in-chief as Tottenham ran riot against a lethargic Newcastle. Left Kieran Trippier for dead to set up two Spurs goals and slotted home a second-half penalty.
Pedro Porro (Tottenham) - 8.39
Tottenham right-back Pedro Porro continued his good form, and put in his best display of the season in Sunday’s 4-1 win over Newcastle. Porro made a total of four tackles and interceptions combined, one clearance and three key passes, one of which found Richarlison for the home side’s third goal of the afternoon. The 24-year-old also made three accurate crosses, as well as two accurate through balls, to land a WhoScored rating of 8.39.
Son Heung-Min (Tottenham) - 9.50
Spurs captain Son Heung-Min moved back to the left-side for the first time in 12 matches, and the result was his second-best performance of the season so far. Son assisted both of the home side’s goals before half time, before finding the net himself from the penalty spot after 85 minutes. The 31-year-old also made a total of four key passes and three successful dribbles, as he returned a WhoScored rating of 9.50 to take home the player of the week award.
Richarlison (Tottenham) - 8.85
Brazilian striker Richarlison had not scored in any of the 19 Premier League matches he had started for Tottenham, until Sunday, when he found the net twice on his full return from injury. The 26-year-old moved into a central attacking role, having played on the left earlier this term, and looked all the better for it, completing his brace shortly after half time to register a WhoScored rating of 8.85.

Do not adjust your monitors. You are reading that correctly. Richarlison has sneaked into our Power Rankings after an emphatic brace against Newcastle.
The former Everton striker has struggled to showcase his form since joining Spurs back in the summer of 2022 but, perhaps, looks to finally be finding hit feet.
The Brazilian international struck either side of half-time during Tottenham's 4-1 win over Newcastle, as he made a return to the starting line-up.
With three goals and three assists in the league thus far, perhaps Richarlison could come good for Spurs after all.
2. Son Heung-Min (new entry)
It's been a while since the South Korean featured in our Power Rankings but it's a deserved return for the Tottenham captain.
Son lit up the pitch on Sunday afternoon as Spurs got back to winning ways with a thumping 4-1 win over Newcastle at home.
Son, who played on the left-wing, caused Magpies full-back Kieran Trippier all kinds of problems in the first-half and picked up two assists in the process.
He then grabbed a goal for himself from the penalty spot after being brought down inside the box, wrapping up an impressive afternoon for the skipper.
Steve Cooper has one of the shortest injury lists in the Premier League but, unfortunately for the under-fire boss, all three of his absentees would be key men for his first choice starting line-up.
Cooper remains without key striker, Taiwo Awoniyi, due to requiring groin surgery. Right-back Serge Aurier is a doubt, whilst impressive central defender Murillo is now a doubt for this weekend as a result of a tight hamstring.
Over the last month or so, Tottenham have been dealing with something of an injury and availability crisis but the Lilywhites are beginning to welcome back some key figures into the first-team fold.
However, they will remain without key first-teamers such as Micky van de Ven, Rodrigo Bentancur and James Maddison. Giovani Lo Celso is also a doubt for this weekend's trip to the City Ground but Postecoglu did describe the injury as 'nothing serious'.

PLAYER OF THE MATCH – DEJAN KULUSEVSKI
Tottenham’s Swedish star was superb on the night, creating chances as a number ten and then playing a starring part in both goals after moving right to fill the gap left by Brennan Johnson’s departure to injury.
His cross for Richarlison’s opener was pure quality, cutting in onto his left as he so often does, and whipping in a cross that was begging for a finish, that the Brazilian delivered.
And he clinically punished a loose clearance for his own goal, surging in on goal, finding space with a dart of movement and then finishing with great power.
With Kulusevski in this sort of form Spurs don’t feel the absence of James Maddison quite so much, which is a massive compliment.
RW: Dejan Kulusevski (Tottenham Hotspur)
Where would Tottenham Hotspur be without Dejan Kulusevski? Hurtling towards mid-table mediocrity, arguably.
With him, however, they're gunning for a top-four berth. The Swede provided a goal and an assist in the 2-0 win over Forest on Friday night to keep Spurs within touching distance of UEFA Champions League qualification.
GK Guglielmo Vicario (Tottenham Hotspur)
PREMIER LEAGUE TEAM OF THE WEEK (3-5-2): The Italian has a decent shout for best goalkeeper in the league this season. Showed excellent command of his area and denied Nottingham Forest on several occasions - none better than the save to keep out Harry Toffolo's header to preserve Spurs' 2-0 lead.
CB Ben Davies (Tottenham Hotspur)
Making the centre-back position his own since Micky van de Ven's injury. Timed his tackles to perfection and was efficient on the ball.
RM Dejan Kulusevski (Tottenham Hotspur)
Was at the heart of every attack Tottenham produced in their 2-0 win over Nottingham Forest. His sumptuous cross was headed in by Richarlison for the first before Kulusevski smashed home the second.
Left-back: Ben Davies – Tottenham
We’ve shifted Ben Davies to his more familiar left-back role for the sake of our team, though his inclusion is in recognition of an exemplary performance out of position this weekend.
Ange Postecoglou has insisted Spurs will look to sign a centre-back next month, despite Davies having ensured the club’s injury absences are not being overly felt. The Welshman was immaculate during the 2-0 win at Nottingham Forest, shining again in the centre of the defence.
Davies led the game for touches (118), won 10 duels, made six clearances and completed 92.2% of his passes. The 30-year-old did not put a foot wrong at the City Ground.
Forward: Dejan Kulusevski – Tottenham
Dejan Kulusevki continued his impressive recent form with a goal and assist as Spurs won at Nottingham Forest on Friday evening. The Swede set up the opening goal with an inviting delivery in first-half stoppage time, with Kulusevski’s whipped cross headed home by Richarlison.
The winger then put the result beyond doubt with a second for Spurs, capitalising on Matt Turner’s miscue to punish the Forest goalkeeper. Fine footwork and a fierce effort followed, blasting through Turner to seal a 2-0 win. As ever, was full of relentless running to help Spurs combat the loss of Yves Bissouma to a red card.

Even at £40 million, the deal taking Maddison from Leicester City to Spurs appears to be one of the shrewdest that any club has made in recent seasons. His impact has been enormous – he was instantly made vice-captain – and his technical ability in midfield has allowed Postecoglou to impose a new, progressive style at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

But he has found the ideal fit for his showman talent under Ange Postecoglou, driving Spurs to their best league start after 10 games since 1960-61. Tottenham made it three wins on the spin but they had to work hard for all the spoils against Everton on Saturday. Guglielmo Vicario is the first of two Spurs representatives having made seven saves and three high ball claims on his way to a WhoScored rating of 8.42.
Emerson Royal (Tottenham) - 8.54
Rounding off the defence is Emerson Royal, who deputised well for Destiny Udogie at left-back against Everton. Emerson held firm at the back as he made eight interceptions, five tackles and five clearances to help Tottenham to all the spoils on Saturday afternoon. The 24-year-old also found a teammate with 92.2% of his 51 attempted passes to nail down his spot in the side.
GK: Guglielmo Vicario (Tottenham)
Tottenham fans would be forgiven for feeling underwhelmed when Vicario was snapped up from Empoli in a £17 million ($22m) deal as the club's new No.1 goalkeeper. The Italy international was not well-known to audiences outside his own country at the stage, and had the tough task of replacing World Cup winner Hugo Lloris, who unsuccessfully pushed for a move away from north London in the summer.
But Vicario instantly erased any doubts over his quality and experience, while proving to be an upgrade on Lloris, with his speed off his line allowing Spurs to play much higher up the pitch to maximise the effectiveness of Postecoglou's attack-minded system. The 27-year-old hailing from Udine is cool, confident, and the epitome of a proper sweeper-keeper.
He also happens to boast outstanding reflexes, which have helped him produce a host of gravity-defying saves that have protected crucial points for Tottenham. It's no exaggeration to say that Vicario's presence could be the difference between Champions League and Europa League qualification for Spurs come May.
LM: Son Heung-min (Tottenham)
Son's status as a Premier League legend has long been secure. He's certainly the best Asian import in the competition's history, and has reached the 10-goal mark in all but one of his nine seasons in England. But by his own admission, the 2022-23 campaign was a huge disappointment. Son's performances dipped as Spurs fell to eighth in the table, and he looked to be in need of a fresh start.
The combination of Postecoglou's arrival and the departure of long-term strike partner Harry Kane has given Son exactly that, with the South Korean rediscovering his best form after being shifted into a No.9 role. Son is already in the hunt for his second Golden Boot, and might even fancy his chances of winning the Premier League for the first time with Spurs within reach of the leaders and still awaiting the return of a number of key players.
They definitely have a shot with Son leading the line, as he remains peerless when it comes to the art of finishing and tends to save his very best displays for the biggest matches. Even at the ripe old age of 31, the best may still be yet to come from Tottenham's main man.
CB: Micky van de Ven - Tottenham
Prior to his injury, there were few defenders as impressive as Micky van de Ven. After a spectacular breakout campaign in the Bundesliga last term, Tottenham snapped up the Dutchman for €40 million in the summer and it turned out to be a great piece of business.
The 22-year-old took to the physicality and speed of the Premier League like a fish to water and proved an ideal fit for Ange Postecoglou's risky approach to defending. His recovery pace is immaculate and he struck up a fantastic partnership with Cristian Romero prior to his unfortunate hamstring injury.
LB: Destiny Udogie - Tottenham
Tottenham’s defence has not been water-tight so far this season - especially since Van de Ven's injury - but their backline has been one of the most impressive in the division.
Like Van de Ven, Destiny Udogie has been superb so far this campaign since his move from Udinese. He has been excellent both in and out of possession and survived the Bukayo Saka test despite a very rough first 20 minutes versus the England international earlier in the season.
Udogie’s ability to drive forward with the ball has been a key facet of Spurs’ tactical play, with Postecoglou utilising the Italian’s immense ability to carry the ball into dangerous areas.
CM: James Maddison - Tottenham
There are several West Ham players who are unfortunate to miss out on our Team of the Season and one of them is James Ward-Prowse. The former Southampton man has been a cheat code when it comes to set-piece deliveries and he has notched three goals and five assists so far this term.
However, James Maddison boasts the exact same numbers and, as he is currently injured, recorded them in fewer games. Prior to his injury, his €46.3m price tag looked a snip as he made an excellent start at Tottenham.
The England international struck up a brilliant relationship with Son Heung-min it looked every bit as devastating as the Korea Republic star’s former connection with Harry Kane.
Maddison seamlessly slotted into the Tottenham team and the fact he is already vice-captain proves how quickly he settled in. He is one of the Premier League’s very best attacking midfielders.
LW: Son Heung-min - Tottenham

Ange Postecoglou has begun life in England in fantastic fashion and his decision to move Son Heung-min into a central striker role has filled the void left by Harry Kane perfectly.
The Korea Republic international features on the left wing in our team, but most of his 11 league goals have come since Postecoglou stationed him through the middle.
He’s shooting more, scoring more and Postecoglou has found the answer to the Harry Kane replacement conundrum. Son looks back to his scintillating best and has become a true leader for Spurs.

When Harry Kane left Tottenham for Bayern Munich in an £82 million transfer in August, the big question was how would Spurs cope without their most prolific goalscorer? Kane was always going to be irreplaceable, but Son Heung-min has stepped up to another level since the England captain's exit and his goals and performances have helped fire Ange Postecoglou's into the title race.
Son has already delivered 10 goals and four assists for Spurs in the league ahead of the Christmas fixtures, taking the South Korea internationals overall tally for 2023 to 17 goals and eight assists in the league.

Tottenham's Son Heung-min talking to Premier League Productions: "It is a very disappointing performance. This is not how we've approached the season. This performance was nowhere near the level we want to play at. We know what our mistakes were but now is not the time to point fingers at each other because the games are coming fast.
"We have to talk about the first half and the early parts of the second half rather than the end. We know we have to play like that from minute one. We have to take the lesson again and move on. Every team is strong in the Premier League and if we're not playing like the last 15 minutes in every game we're going to struggle and this has to be a big wake-up call.

Son Heung-Min (Tottenham Hotspur)
With Harry Kane leaving and Hugo Lloris losing his place in the first team, Son Heung-min was always going to inherit a lot of responsibility at Tottenham last summer. On top of having to shoulder the burden for the loss of goals that Kane’s departure meant, Son was also named Lloris’ replacement as club captain. He has taken on any added pressure impressively.
Only Mohamed Salah (19) and Erling Haaland (18) have more goal contributions in the Premier League this season than Son (16), with his goals (11) and assists (5) worth 14 points to his team. In away games, only Haaland (8) has scored more goals this season than Son (7).
He has proved the perfect fit for Ange Postecoglou’s new-look Spurs both in and out of possession, and Son’s work rate and tactical intelligence have been crucial in Tottenham’s transformation into a proactive pressing team. The Korean leads the Premier League for pressures in the final third (361 – 58 more than anyone else) and pressures in the final third resulting in a turnover (69), while only Chelsea’s Conor Gallagher (26) has directly won possession in the attacking third more times than him (21). Having thrived both up front and on the left side of Tottenham’s attack, he has had a really strong first half of 2023-24.
7. Son Heung-min (down six)
While the vast majority of his side were below par at Brighton - the Spurs captain admitted as much himself - the South Korea star was at least able to have some impact on proceedings late on.
With Brighton 4-0 up and cruising to a comfortable win, two late goals from the visitors threatened what would have been an unlikely comeback, with Son setting up Alejo Veliz on 81 minutes for Tottenham's first.
Son had five shots himself, though none of them were on target, while he made just the one dribble and was dispossessed three times in the game.
Son is undeniably world class on his day, but it was a quieter evening for the Tottenham skipper when his side needed him on Thursday.
Dejan Kulusevski collected a fifth yellow card of the season so the Sweden international attacker will have to miss this weekend’s visit of Bournemouth due to suspension. He will join Yves Bissouma on Tottenham’s list of suspended players for this weekend.
Oliver Skipp is expected to return after suffering from a recent knock but the home team will continue to be without the likes of key players such as Micky van de Ven and James Maddison due to injury.

Both stars returning from the Asia Cup put their stamp on the game, with Kaoro Mitoma was as classu as amu player on display and only a fantastic save from Vicario denied him doubling Brighton's lead before half time. Pascal Gross and Billy Gilmour were also equal parts tenacious and classy in midfield for them, while centre backs Lewis Dunk and Jan Paul van Hecke gave everything in defence. The award has to go to the player who refused to allow the game to end as a draw though.

Although he only entered the action in the 63rd minute, Johnson provided the missing ingredient Tottenham had been lacking despite their domination.
Aside from scoring himself, it really was a super-sub performance from the Wales international.
For the first goal, he reaped the rewards for his resilience in chasing Andersen down and subsequently providing an incisive pass for Werner to tuck home.
Johnson’s persistence was evident again for the third goal. Pressing Palace to prevent them launching a bid for a dramatic equaliser, his intervention put Son clean through to wrap up the points.

Centre-back: Micky van de Ven – Tottenham
Dominant in the early exchanges against Aston Villa and made one timely challenge to stop Ollie Watkins inside the opening five minutes.
Van de Ven was the outstanding performer on the visitor’s side until his early withdrawal with what appeared to be a hamstring injury. That will be a concern for Ange Postecoglou, with the Dutchman’s power and pace a formidable obstacle for opposition forwards to navigate.
Forward: Son Heung-min – Tottenham
Son Heung-min was at his brilliant best as Tottenham took a huge step towards the Champions League with a 4-0 thrashing of top-four rivals Aston Villa. The South Korean led the line superbly with excellent movement, as Spurs scored four times in the second half at Villa Park.
Son made goals for Brennan Johnson and Timo Werner with intelligent passes and converted one himself emphatically for his 159th goal for Spurs. A superb showing from the skipper.
Guglielmo Vicario (Tottenham Hotspur): What a save. Anything other than a point-blank stop by Vicario from Nicolo Zaniolo's attempt on goal at a crucial stage of Tottenham's 4-0 win over Aston Villa would have been a game-changer. The Italian keeper put his body on the line to make the save and it paid off.
This was another very important clean sheet by Spurs as goal difference may have a bearing on matters at the end of the season. I've said on a numerous occasions the best thing they did was to get rid of keeper Hugo Lloris - and it should have happened years ago.
Since Vicario's arrival, the Spurs keeper has saved the team several points, which is precisely what a top-class keeper should be doing. This is now all about who will finish fourth - and with a game in hand and a better goal difference Spurs have stolen the initiative.
Cristian Romero (Tottenham Hotspur): Last week it was Micky van de Ven who made my team selection, but this week it is Romero and for very good reason. The Argentina international was the coolest defender on the pitch and needed to be as it got a little heated at Villa Park. Romero became more prominent in the second half due to the departure of the impressive Van de Ven, who suffered an injury but was performing brilliantly at the time.
Once Van de Ven left the pitch Romero took control and looked immense. Regular readers will know how furious I was with Romero because the defender was repeatedly getting sent off quite needlessly. However, he seems to have re-evaluated his game and realised that really good defenders don't have to kick their opponents - just defend.
James Maddison (Tottenham Hotspur): Nothing could stop Maddison from dominating the midfield. Spurs controlled this fixture against Aston Villa from start to finish and Maddison was at the heart of it. His goal was a peach only surpassed by the most glorious cross supplied by [Pape] Sarr. Maddison had to cover a great deal of ground to get into the six-yard box to get on the end of the cross.
Tottenham's performances have got gradually better since Maddison's return from injury. However, there can be no doubt that if Spurs are going to pip Aston Villa and take the final Champions League spot, they have to keep Maddison fit.
Son Heung-min (Tottenham Hotspur): One goal and two assists says it all. From the moment the game started there was only one winner. Son's one-touch finish against Aston Villa demonstrated the versatility of the striker. He's not just about scoring on the break or creating his own goals, he can be a fox in the box too. I also get the feeling that his appointment as team captain has made the South Korea international more of a team player.
His assists for Brennan Johnson and Timo Werner didn't just prove the point, they destroyed Villa. As for John McGinn's red card, the Villa captain should have known better. A three-match ban may just have cost his team a Champions League spot - and if it's not three matches it should be for a tackle like that.
David Datro Fofana deserves a mention for his absolute rocket in the same game, but Tottenham skipper Son Heung-min was the first name on our gameweek 28 selection. Directly contributing to three of the Lilywhites' four efforts at Villa Park, the South Korean slipped in Brennan Johnson and cut back for Timo Werner either side of a powerful finish into the roof of the net, as Tottenham put their top-four destiny back in their own hands.
Cristian Romero (Tottenham) - 7.90
Tottenham vice-captain Cristian Romero helped his team to a huge 4-0 win at Villa Park on Sunday afternoon, and three points that could prove pivotal in the race for Champions League football. The Argentinian defender made three tackles, three interceptions, two clearances and one block to help Ange Postecoglou’s side to a first Premier League clean sheet since December, and himself to a WhoScored rating of 7.90.
Brennan Johnson (Tottenham) - 8.17
Spurs winger Brennan Johnson registered his highest rated performance of the season so far in Sunday’s thrashing of Aston Villa. The 22-year-old notched a fourth league goal of the season, while he also made two tackles and completed four dribbles to earn a WhoScored rating of 8.17.

With a WhoScored rating of 9.35, Tottenham star Heung-Min Son is our Premier League Player of the Week after an outstanding showing at Villa Park on Sunday afternoon.
