The Spurs centre-forward is enjoying a superb season and at times it felt like he was Plan A, B and C on a disjointed evening for the visitors at Goodison Park. The two chances for the goals were both handed to the England captain by defensive errors from Michael Keane, but the finishes on each occasion oozed quality. Mourinho will be waiting nervously for an update on the forward’s fitness ahead of the League Cup final, and the watching Gareth Southgate will also have everything crossed that Kane is going to be fit for the European Championships this summer.
Player Ratings
Tottenham Hotspur: Lloris 8, Dier 6, Alderweireld 6, Rodon 7, Aurier 5, Ndombele 4, Hojbjerg 4, Sissoko 5, Reguilon 5, Son 5, Kane 9.
Tottenham Hotspur (3-4-1-2) H Lloris 7 — T Alderweireld 6, J Rodon 6, E Dier 5 — S Aurier 6, P Hojbjerg 6, M Sissoko 6, S Reguilón 5 (L Moura 64, 6) — T Ndombele 6 (É Lamela 64, 6) — H Kane 8, Son Heung-min 6.
8 -- As was mentioned previously, Mourinho was visibly frustrated before half-time, but he was reactive in his substitutions, rather than proactive like Carlo Ancelotti, who brought Seamus Coleman on to assist Sigurdsson almost immediately. The changes worked eventually, as it was Erik Lamela's ball in that resulted in Kane scoring the equaliser -- even if there was help from Michael Keane's calamitous defending.
Player Ratings 3-4-1-2
Hugo 7 : Toby 5, Joe Rodon 7, Dier 6 : Aurier 6, Sissoko 6, Højbjerg 6, Reguilon 4 : Ndombele 6 : Sonny 6, Kane ☆9
FW Son Heung-min, 6 -- While the South Korean looked threatening in certain stages, he never really managed to test Jordan Pickford. There were times where he looked a bit tired.
Set up his team in a way to win but continues to be let down by his players’ ability and their fitness. Mourinho controls the fitness and should not have allowed it to get to the point that it is. As for the ability to make simple passes consistently and run with your man and not commit dumb fouls, well you can point the finger at whoever you want. Appreciate Mourinho staying above the Paul Pogba fray in the post-match interview.
Player Ratings 3-4-1-2
Hugo 7 : Toby 6, Joe Rodon 6.5, Dier 5.5 : Aurier 5, Sissoko 4, Højbjerg 6, Reguilon 5 : Ndombele 6.5 : Sonny 6, Kane 8
Son – 6
Heung-Min Son had a couple of moments like when he beat the defender to the line but Jordan Pickford got just enough on the ball to deflect it wide. Was anonymous most of the evening, mostly as he did not see the ball as it went long back and forth between the teams. Son needs play-makers to feed him, when Kane is not making plays, Son is going hungry.
The Player to Watch in our Preview, it was not the most memorable of outings for Son, who did not get into the scoring positions as frequently as he usually does. More creative this time around and played as many as 3 key passes, although he was wasteful in possession as well as a result, losing the ball 21 times.
Heung-Min Son: 6 – Got into one or two dangerous positions but was unable to finish from difficult angles. He was isolated at times, and on one occasion went on a solo run, which deserved a goal. AFP
