Japan princess makes rare solo public visit
TOKYO (AFP) - Japan's Crown Princess Masako, who has suffered stress-induced illness while struggling to adjust to royal life, Tuesday made her first solo public appearance outside the palace walls in three years.
A smiling Masako, 45, wearing a white high-necked sweater, beige trouser suit and pearl necklace, visited a Tokyo department store for an exhibition of devices invented by housewives, television footage showed.
Masako listened as her attendant explained the exhibited items, ranging from a butter-maker to a device to help disabled people write.
It was her first independent public appearance since 2006. Masako has skipped most public duties over the past five years, although she has attended several public functions with her husband, Crown Prince Naruhito.
Masako, a former career diplomat, has been under intense pressure to bear a son under Japan's male-only royal succession law.
Masako and Naruhito have one child, seven-year-old Princess Aiko, while his younger brother has a two-year-old boy, the first prince born to the royal family in 40 years.
In a sign of her recovery, the princess this year played a full part in the traditional New Year greetings at the palace in central Tokyo, before tens of thousands of well-wishers.

Princess Masako of Japan upbeat on rare solo engagement
3 MARCH 2009
Her face wreathed in smiles, Japan's Crown Princess Masako made a return to official duties this week - fulfilling her first solo engagement since 2006. The wife of Crown Prince Naruhito, who has been suffering from stress-induced illness blamed on the pressures of life within the Imperial Household, visited a Tokyo department store to attend an exhibition of gadgets invented by housewives.
In a departure from past appearances - when the princess has looked poised but withdrawn - the 45-year-old smiled and laughed as she was shown the items, which ranged from a butter-maker to a device to help disabled people write.
The former diplomat, who's been unwell since 2003, has been absent from most public duties over the past five years, only occasionally attending official functions with her husband. During this time she has received the full backing and support of her loyal spouse.

WBC/Tokyo: Crowd embraces Sadaharu Oh
March 5, 7:00 AM
Oh takes the field (Photo/Bob Sherwin)TOKYO - It's hard to convey the excitement for Japanese fans today after the opening game for the 2009 World Baseball Classic. Baseball in March had never been like this.
The Japanese are the defending WBC champions as they began the tournament against China with a 4-0 victory. The 55,000-season Tokyo Dome was sold out. The wildly partisan fans had the rare opportunity to see five favorite sons return, big leaguers who played once again on Japanese soil. Among those returning were Mariners right fielder Ichiro and catcher Kenji Johjima.
But there was one above them all - Sadaharu Oh. The Japan baseball legend with 868 career home runs still looks fit and vigorous despite a battle with stomach cancer. Japanese talk with reverence about the home run king and bow ever so deeply.
Oh threw out the ceremonial first pitch and looked good doing it. He wound up and threw a smooth strike to the catcher. He was given a huge applause.
There were other Japanese baseball celebrities here. Former Mariner closer Kasu Sasaki, now a TBS broadcaster, hung with Ichiro behind the cage before the game. Also former star Hiromi Makihara was here as a broadcaster. He once threw a rare perfect game in 1994.
The royal family also attended, Crown Prince Naruhito and Crown Princess Masako. Only this week the Princess made a public appearance outside the Imperial Palace for the first time in two years. She has had trouble dealing with the trappings of royalty.
The biggest reaction of the evening, however, came when Ichiro stepped to the plate to open the game. When he swung his bat around and up into his characteristic arm extension the camera flashes electrified the dome, causing the crowd to 'woo' in unison.
Return of Wang
You are a Rhodes Scholar of Mariners trivia if you can remember the name Wang Chao. It's not an '80s rock group.
Chao was a low-risk free agent signing by the Mariners about five years ago. He's a tall, lanky pitcher out of mainland China. His mother was a great athlete as a center fielder for the Chinese national softball team and his father was a highly regarded athletic trainer.

But Wang never made his way out of Single-A ball before being released. Ted Heid, the Mariners international scout, said American food didn't agree with him and he was homesick. His body never filled out and he failed to progress.
But Heid said, “if I had to do it all over again, I'd do it all over again.''
Then lo and behold, look at Wang now. He was the starting left fielder for the China team against Japan today. He had converted to a position player and learned his new role so well that he's now among the country's best hitters, such as they are.
China Rising
The Chinese are still a long way from establishing a quality baseball foundation but if they ever do they can credit former Mariners manager Jim Lefebvre.
Lefebvre nurtured the Chinese program for most of the past decade, as a leadup to the Beijing Olympics last year. He accepted the hitting coach position with the Padres this year, turning over the team to former big leaguer Terry Collins.
Collins, like Lefebvre, is an upbeat guy, always looking for slivers of things to cling to as the players develop in the fledgling program. I asked him if Lefebvre gave him any advice heading into the WBC.
“He felt last summer at the Olympics they were under a ton of pressure, playing in front of their own countrymen,'' Collins said. “He feels that there is a difference in the Olympics than the World Baseball Classic. He said the competition you guys will be facing will actually be a lot better than what they saw at the Olympics.
“The one thing you have to talk to them about is to get over their nervousness, get them to relax and play. They probably won't play on bigger stage than (here) against the champions. As I told them, this is a game that's hard to play, otherwise a lot more people would be playing it. Enjoy it. Respect the sport; respect their opponents and don't be intimidated by anybody. It's just a game.''

China shows heart in loss to Japan
Offense falls short, but pitching strong in Classic opener
By Wayne Graczyk / Special to MLB.com
TOKYO -- A determined China club fell short in the opening game of the 2009 World Baseball Classic, falling to Japan, 4-0, in front of 43,428 fans in Tokyo on Thursday night.
China had as many hits in the game as Japan -- five -- but could not come through with runners on base. The big blow for Japan, a two-run home run by third baseman Shuichi Murata, was just too much to overcome.
Six Japanese pitchers combined for the shutout, with starter Yu Darvish getting the victory. Darvish went the first four innings, allowing only one base runner on a walk in the second. He faced the minimum and struck out three.
Japan threatened to score in the first two innings, but China starter Li Chenhao worked out of a couple of jams and stranded three Japanese base runners.
The Samurai broke the scoreless deadlock in the bottom of the third when Norichika Aoki singled to center, driving in Hiroyuki Nakajima, who had walked and stole second. Murata followed with his line-drive home run into the left-field stands to make the score 3-0.
Japan added a fourth run without a hit in the bottom of the sixth inning when with two outs after two walks and a force out, China pitcher Sun Guoqiang balked with runners at first and third.
Superstar and fan favorite Ichiro Suzuki was held in check by the Chinese hurlers, going 0-for-5.
Japan manager Tatsunori Hara said, "The Chinese pitchers did well. Our advance scout had told us they were good, but tonight they were much better than we had expected."
China skipper Terry Collins also expressed pride in the way his team -- especially the pitchers -- performed. "Whenever you face a lineup like (Japan's) and give up only five hits, you've pitched a good game," he said.
As for his team's handling of Ichiro, Collins said, "We got him at the right time. You're not going to hold down Ichiro for very long, and he could have just as easily gone 5-for-5."
Collins also indicated he was satisfied with the work of his starting pitcher, saying, "I would like to have pitched Li Chenhao another inning, but his pitch count was coming up, and it was time to make a change."
The atmosphere at Tokyo Dome resembled that of a mid-summer all-star game with a lavish opening ceremony, the first ball thrown by Sadaharu Oh, the world home run king and manager of Japan's 2006 Classic championship team, and numerous pitching changes because of the Classic pitch count rule.
Japan's Crown Prince Hironomiya and Crown Princess Masako attended the game, waving to the crowd from a royal box at the end of the seventh inning.
Japan now faces the winner of Friday night's game between Korea and Chinese Taipei on Saturday night, while China plays the loser of that game on Saturday afternoon.
Starting pitchers for Friday's game have been announced as Ryu Hyunjin for Korea and Lee Chen-Chang for Chinese Taipei.

Tokyo to seek royal help for 2016 Olympic bid
EmailMay-28-09 11:08pm
From: www.afp.com
Tokyo will ask Japan's Crown Prince Naruhito and Princess Masako to help its bid to host the 2016 Summer Olympics, matching stars lined up by other candidate cities, the capital's governor said Thursday.
"It will be absolutely necessary to solicit kind help from the imperial family for the benefit of the Japanese people and for the history of Japan," said Shintaro Ishihara, who also heads Tokyo's Olympic bid committee.
"We plan to make a formal request through the government in the days ahead," he said, adding that it might be too unconventional to ask Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko to undertake the role.
He said Tokyo would ask the 49-year-old prince to present its bid to around 100 members of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on October 1, the day before the meeting in Copenhagen at which they will choose the Olympics venue.
The four candidate cities will also have an opportunity to showcase their bids to IOC members at the IOC headquarters in Lausanne in mid-June.
Ishihara was speaking after hosting a reception for 56 Tokyo-based foreign diplomats, including 17 ambassadors, to promote Tokyo's plan to host what it calls the "most compact and environmentally friendly" Olympics.
Tokyo's plea to the royals follows its rival candidates' support from their global celebrities.
Chicago has US President Barack Obama and Rio de Janeiro Brazilian football legend Pele while Madrid has the galaxy of Spanish Spanish soccer stars as well King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia.
Brazil was represented by a senior diplomat at Tokyo's reception. The United States and Spain did not attend.
Ishihara, 76, a novelist-turned-politician famous for controversial remarks, said he had not sought the support of a prominent political figure because it was uncertain who would head Japan's government in October.
Polls show that the Liberal Democratic Party of Prime Minister Taro Aso, a former Olympic clay target shooter, could lose to the opposition Democratic Party in a general election which must be held by September.
"There has been a succession of prime ministers in recent years but I'm not sure if they were material or figures who can symbolise Japan," said Ishihara.

Third birthday for Prince Hisahito of Japan
September 6, 12:42 AMJapan Headlines ExaminerJoshua Williams
Prince Hisahito, currently the third in line for the Japanese throne, turned three years old on September 6th. By all Japanese media accounts, the Prince seems to be a happy, healthy, polite young boy.
Reports say that the prince is currently about 3' 1” tall, and weighs around 30 lbs. He likes to do outdoor activities, such as riding his tricycle, playing with toy balls, and helping with gardening.
About the Japanese Imperial line
Prince Hisahito is the third child and first son of Prince Fumihito and Princess Kiko. Prince Fumihito is second in line to the throne of Japan after his brother, the Crown Prince Naruhito. Crown Prince Naruhito has one daughter, Princess Aiko.
Before Prince Hisahito's birth, the Imperial Family of Japan, which currently has 23 members, had been plagued by a lack of male heirs. There had been debate within Japan about whether to amend laws towards the archaic Imperial succession system to allow for female heirs to the thrown. However, with Prince Hisahito's birth in 2006, the call for imperial equality has been largely stifled.
Japan's imperial family is said by some to stretch back more than 2,500 years, following a traditional line of male succession. Although there have on occasion been reigning Empresses in Japan, the last being in the 18th century, conservatives tend to dismiss their presence as mere placeholders in history.
Japanese Emperors were regarded as descendants of the Gods among the people of Japan until Emperor Hirohito renounced divinity after World War II. These days the Imperial Family acts largely as a symbol with quasi-celebrity status within Japan, performing public duties and ceremonies.
While the Imperial Family has not sway over Japanese laws or policies, the reigning Emperor, currently Akihito, has the job of performing appointment ceremonies for top public officials, such as the Prime Minister, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Cabinet members, and Ambassadors. (The new U.S. Ambassador to Japan, John Roos, met briefly with the Emperor in August to confirm his appointment.) The actual choices for top public servants are done by officials within the Japanese government.
