“The Dream of a Fire Engine” was very confusing and I still do not really have a good idea about what it means. At first look at the title, I imagined a young boy dreaming of becoming a firefighter and the prestige that comes with the profession. He dreams of being a hero. The first two stanzas seem ordinary and involving being a firefighter, remembering his grandfather, mother and sister and why he does his job- to protect them. The first line of the poem reminds me of red due to the color that you see when the sun is glaring and your eyes are closed; you still see red. The second line says siren so I imagine he’s talking about a fire truck from these two lines. The last three stanzas just throw me off. After I read about the line involving “Communist,” the character with chopped-off feet and then Mao, I immediately relate this red to Communist China. Somehow the author, I think, is alluding through this poem about the Communist State of China under Mao Zedong and the oppression faced under this tyrannical rule. Not too sure though with the first two stanzas or half the 3rd stanza. Judging from the author of the poem, I think it has to do with Communist Chine rather than a fire engine.
